Happy Tuesday! Did you miss me yesterday? It was a long weekend here in Canberra and so I took the weekend off and spent it with family and friends. It was just what I needed and I’m so happy to have had such a fantastic three days with people I love and adore. Sometimes you don’t realise what you need until you accidentally stumble upon it. I hadn’t planned to have Monday off but it just happened and it was fabulous. I’m feeling really pumped about the week ahead and I can’t wait to get back to creating and having fun.
I’ve been thinking a bit this past weekend about the people and things we bring into our lives and the impacts they can have. On Saturday I went through our kitchen and dining room and started cutting back on all the stuff that we had accumulated in the five years we’ve been in this house. We had a 5 x 5 ikea square shelving unit in our dining room and it was filled to bursting with things that we just didn’t use and things that didn’t bring any value into our home. I went through that unit ruthlessly and managed to get rid of so much stuff that we were able to throw the unit out and replace it with the kitchen hutch that I used to use in my sewing room. I can’t believe the difference it’s made to that space. It feel bigger and lighter and it’s gone from being a room I avoided to one I now like going into.
The transformation has inspired me to start looking at the other rooms in our house and think about what I’m actually using and what value it’s bringing into our lives. I find it so easy to just accumulate without purpose and it’s something I’d like to change. I hold on to so much stuff out of self-imposed obligation and sentimentality when in fact it’s just weighing me down. Sometimes a good purge is just what the doctor ordered and I’ve got the toy situation in our house firmly in my sites. It’s time to go through the tubs of toys and get rid of the broken and unplayed with. (If I can just block the thoughts from my head that the toys have feelings and lives like in Toy Story I’ll be fine!)
