By the Bundle Book Review

By the Bundle is the debut book from Australian quilter, fabric designer and all round lovely lady Emma Jean Jansen. The book contains 12 quilt patterns that are perfect for use with Fat Quarters. It’s brilliant for all those bundles that you fall in love with but just never know what project to use to showcase them. Before you dismiss this as a book only for fat quarters let me tell you that all the patterns come with the fabric requirements for those of you that like to pick your own palette. So really, there’s something for everyone in this book!

I know that this is a quilting book, but the production quality of this book makes it a coffee table book. When I thought about the kind of book I’d like to write I was determined that I’d want to showcase Australia as well as my work. Then I got my hands on a copy of By the Bundle and I cursed. Out loud. By the Bundle is like a love letter to Australia in the form of 12 quilts and spectacular scenery. It’s stunning.

I mean, come on! It’s not fair to the rest of us. The photography by Jade Smithard is art. Jade has perfectly framed Emma’s amazing quilts using the magic that is Australia. Needless to say, my book won’t be showcasing Australia – who wants to go up against this! I know when I’m beat, but in a good way.

The quilt patterns are really great and there’s something in there for every skill level. The pattern instructions are really clear and concise. I love that you get to see the quilt in full along side the instructions. It makes it so easy to ensure you’re on the right track.

I also really love that there’s a mix of techniques in the book. All the techniques are well covered so if this is your first time tackling something like machine appliqué or foundation paper piecing you’ll be supported.

If you’re looking for a perfect gift for the quilter in your life then you can’t go past By the Bundle. It’s also a great book to have on hand if you’re in swaps or have a penpal overseas; By the Bundle makes a great gift for those wanting to showcase Australia with those that love quilting.
