I love it when a little bit of web surfing yields something amazing. To announce the birth of his son Ty Mattson of Mattson Creative designed the most amazing birth announcement. In his own words:

When I found out that we were going to have a boy, I started to think about my own childhood and all of the things I loved when I was a kid. So I wanted to design an announcement that celebrated those things and captured that particular idea of boyhood wonder and adventure. I created this illustration and worked with the incredible team at Studio on Fire to have it letterpressed on 220lb. Lettra paper. They did a fantastic job on the printing. It really turned out great. I think it’s safe to say that this is my favorite project of all time. And definitely my favorite client.

Here is just a sample of the birth announcement, if you want to see more (and you do) check out the Mattson Creative Blog.

After weeks of slicing, dicing and julienne(ing) the Masterchef Australia contestants the final is airing on Sunday 25 July. The success of this season is epitomized by the fact that the Australian Federal Election Debate was moved from it’s original scheduled time so as not to clash with the finale. Seems even the politicians don’t want to compete with the wanna be chefs.

I didn’t watch season one, nor do I watch or follow anything to do with the contestants from season one. For some reason I just didn’t get into it in the first season. I wasn’t so fortunate to miss the bug this time around.

For the past few weeks I have been captivated by Masterchef Australia and the Masterchef Twitter Feed. Seems I haven’t been the only one to notice that the popularity of this season is being, in part, fueled by those on Twitter. Natalie Hambly wrote about the phenomena on 23 July 2010 in the Sydney Morning Herald.

Some of my favourite moments from the season have come not from the show but from Twitter. It’s provided an outlet for my snark and outrage at some of the decisions made in relation to the contestants and their performance. I’m still smarting over the elimination of Marion, and thanks to Twitter I know I’m not alone.

Twitter also provided Chef Neil Perry (Twitter ID: rockpoolgroup) with an outlet to express his feelings about being misquoted by Jonathon Moran in The Sunday Telegraph on 18 July 2010. The article attributed the following quotes to Perry:

“If you leave MasterChef and think that you are now one of the great chefs of Australia, I think you are probably up for a pretty rough ride,” Perry told The Sunday Telegraph.

“These people are just nobodies with very little experience, and [aided by the show] are able to be exposed and have opportunities. That’s why people go on the show.

“Most of them don’t go on the show thinking they will be opening a restaurant … most go on there to get enough media fame to be able to go on and do more media things.”

“You’ve got to have a really good palate and you’ve got to understand the process if you want to put your own spin on it rather than just put your name on it,” he said.

“And writing a cookbook is a really difficult thing to do.”

In fact, I received this direct message (DM) from rockpoolgroup after posting a tweet about Perry doing a backflip on his comments:

People seemed to be shocked by the comments as they came from a chef that had been a contributor to a number of episodes this season. Unfortunately people also took it as an opportunity to sink the boot into Perry. Which is a shame as Perry has done a lot of positive work for the food industry both nationally and internationally, regardless of his personal opinion about a reality television show.

One of my favourite television blogs, Reality Ravings, also posted about Perry’s comments and the majority of the readers seemed to be in agreement with Perry’s comments. In fact the comments on the original article seemed to support him in the main as well. However it didn’t stop him from emailing Matt Preston, Masterchef Host, to clarify his position. Matt Preston then took to Facebook and posted the email.

Regardless of whether he said it or not, I happen to agree with the comments. Masterchef Australia is not a trade qualification; it’s a game show. None of the contestants, even those that win the show, can call themselves Chefs. They’re just glorified cooks.

The fact that they leave the show and start their own sauce ranges, restaurants or cookbooks is more about putting a celebrity face on a product then being qualified to do something.

The performance of the final two contestants, Adam and Callum, who will battle out on Sunday 25 July, merely supports this position.

Adam has been a consistent performer. He’s produced quality dishes and always been in the top of the contestants. However at crucial times his pallet and tendency to overstretch himself have caused him to stumble.

Callum on the other hand has stunned Australia by making it to the final two. Admittedly, as a 33 year old that did some time in a professional kitchen I would struggle to produce some of the dishes he has delivered, it still doesn’t detract from the fact that he has consistently ignored expert advice, failed to plate dishes for judging and stumbled over simple recipes such as custard.

Let none of us forget the Country Women’s Association challenge where they all failed miserably to make traditional recipes such as lamingtons, fruit cake and jam. Something that should have been fairly straight forward and basic caused major pitfalls for all the contestants, least of all Adam and Callum. Interestingly, it was this challenge that pitted Adam and Callum against each other to make lamingtons. Adam was triumphant in the end plating some of the best food on the day. However Callum failed to even make a consistently sized product.

It will be interesting to see whether history repeats on the finale. If I was a betting lass, and history and my bank balance has shown that I am, my money would be on Adam to win. He has the maturity, calm nature and eye for detail that Callum is missing.

Regardless of the outcome, I’ve had a blast with this show and the interaction on Twitter. I know my week nights won’t be the same without it, and I’m not alone there. In fact, Jane over at Life @ Number 8 has posted about this exact problem. She’s gone so far as to suggest alternative ways to fill the void that will be left by Masterchef Australia. For me, I’ll be replacing one reality television addiction with another and tuning in to Masterchef USA. Bring on the Ramsey!

HUBBY and I are planning a trip to Melbourne in the next week to see Mumford & Sons and Stephen Fry. We’re both really excited, but I suspect I’m more so then he is because I’m also planning a little blog inspired voyeurism. You see there’s a few blogs who I love that are located near Melbourne and have stores attached to their blogs. Or should that be blogs attached to their stores? Either way there’s shopping involved.

One of the blogs that I’m planning on visiting is The Lark. The Lark store is located in Daylesford, which HUBBY informs me is a mere hour or so from where we’ll be staying in Melbourne. I’m so excited at the prospect of being able to wonder through the store and see all the handmade goodness up close and personal.

I love reading The Lark because it provides an insight into living in a small community, what it takes to keep a successful business afloat and how to juggle work with family. A lot of the time I use The Lark as a starting point for all of the fantasies I have about moving to the country and living a simpler life.

I was just cruising through the blogs that I love when I came across Dave Coote Design on Design*Sponge. I’ve been browsing real estate sites for the past few weeks and now I’m browsing them to see if I can get a place with space for putting in my own writer’s cabin. Only instead of using it to write my manifesto I’d be filling it with craft and sewing supplies. Oh, and a nice little nook to spend time reading.

To add to the design brilliance Dave Coote and his wife have opened an online store; Pale and Interesting. So once I’ve found my house and built my cabin I’ll be able to furnish it with wonderful items found on Pale and Interesting.

Today’s activity in 31 Days to Build a Better Blog is to think about lists as posts. I’ve been partial to a few list posts in my time, but I’ve not giving much thought to writing them. So today I put my head to work and tried to come up with a list post.

I actually surprised myself and came up with a few different list ideas, but I’ve decided to stick with a simple one for today and post a few different list posts over the coming weeks.

In an attempt to let you know a little more useless information about me I thought I would give you….

Twitter – I don’t know how people lived without Twitter. I am addicted. Totally. I love all the interaction that you can have without leaving the comfort of your home, and even if you have to leave your home you can take Twitter with you.

Etsy – The next evolution from eBay. I adore Etsy. I could spend hours just window shopping on the Etsy site.

Apple Products – My iPhone never leaves my hand. My iPod is essential to making my day complete. My Macbook Pro is my lifeline to the world I love. I am totally an Apple disciple.

Books – I’m a mad reader. I can’t get enough of books. I would love to live in a library. There’s something wonderful about books lined up on a bookshelf.

Teddy Bear – My Teddy Bear was a gift from my HUBBY on our first Valentine’s Day together. I love my teddy bear. I travel with my teddy, and the couple of times I’ve been in hospital my teddy has come with me. I tell Ted all my secrets and when I’m really upset and just feeling low Ted is always there for me. Every girl should have a teddy!

Television – I love television. Only I don’t love watching television the conventional way. Now it’s all about watching television while watching Twitter. Or it’s about watching television shows in one big hit from DVD. There are some really great shows being produced at the moment. I feel like television is going trough a renaissance of sorts. Love it!

Camera – I love my camera, I just don’t use it as much as I would like. I love getting a good shot. I love seeing life through the lens. I love spending time with the men in my life talking about the shots and comparing what we’ve captured. Always a great source of enjoyment.

HUBBY – Obviously this list isn’t in order of importance… I just didn’t want to put him at the top and then have to live with the gloating. He’s my best friend and the person I want to rush home to and tell him about everything. I adore him and would be lost without him. He’s the perfect accompaniment to my madness.

Chocolate – My eating habits changed a lot after my gastric surgery, but one thing that didn’t was my love of chocolate. There’s nothing better than a chocolate something. It’s just amazing. I can’t get enough!

Internet – Seriously, what did people do before the internet? I would be lost without it. I have meet so many amazing people through the internet. I’ve learnt so much about the wonderful world we live in. My mind has just been blown by the things out there on the internet. I’ve also managed to spend many many hours doing nothing but surfing the internet. It’s mind blowing.

As a list post it probably won’t go viral, but I’m sure thinking about some posts in the future that I hope will. It’s given me a new found respect and possible love for the list!

I have been following Suzanne’s blog, an open [sketch]book, for over a year now and every time I visit I’m in awe of the wonderful talent and amazing outlook on life. Not to mention Suzanne understands the love of a good beagle.

Suzanne shares her art, which draws (no pun intended) on the everyday items in her world. She has such a simple aesthetic that belies the inherent skill needed to be an artist.

I would love one day to be able to purchase some of Suzanne’s art for our house. I would love to see a greeting card line that featured Suzanne’s work. It would be wonderful for any occasion! But until that day I’ll just have to content myself with enjoying her work and life via an open [sketch]book!

A few weeks ago I signed up for the Alphabet Walk happening over on One Sydney Road. I had completely forgotten about it until Monday of this week when it came crashing back to me as I looked at the little note I’d made on my calendar.

As is often the case when I forget about things the world was not conspiring to help me in my last minute attempt to get photos of things inspired by my letter. It has rained all week, I’ve been stuck in a work conference for the last three days and I had no idea what I was going to do. But after the sun cleared, the conference finished early and I had a moment to think I inspiration hit.

This week I got a little something something in the mail from the talented Derby Vixen, TOE GUARDS! They arrived just in time for the recommencement of derby training and I adore them! It’s just a shame I spent so much time on the track on Tuesday night they got little bit scuffed up. I’m completely smitten with them.

Something else I’m completely smitten with at the moment, George’s TUMMY.

She has such a little Buddha belly going on these days and when the two of us are laying on the couch together I often find myself being forced into giving her tummy scratches. She loves them. And let’s face it at this stage of our relationship I just like giving her what she wants so she’s not off chewing the things I love!

So that’s my leg of the Alphabet Walk… I’m off to see what everyone else has posted.
