Things to Make & Gift Your BFF

With my trip to Houston just over 3 months away (yikes!) I’ve started thinking and plotting what little gifts I can take to share with the friends that I only get to see when I make it to the US. Last year we all swapped handmade gifts and this year I’d like to do the same with maybe one or two little extra gifts added into the mix. Today’s a good day to be thinking about it because it’s International Friendship Day (thank you desk calendar!). Because I love enabling and I know how the handmade community loves a good project I thought I’d share some of the things I’ve found both in the “things to make” and “things to buy” categories.

Handmade by Me Gifts

Obviously I need to make something to exchange, but I just can’t narrow down exactly what. I’ve put together a short list of things I’d like to make.

Of course at the top of the list is the much loved Sew Together Bag. I’d love to have a crack at making one (or more) of these bags, just not sure I can do multiple zippers under a time pressure. You can get the pattern for AU$11.98 by clicking here.

If I had plenty of time and was a way better sewer than I am then I would definitely have a crack at making one of the Necessary Clutches. I have one (which I ordered from someone else) and it’s brilliant (just a shame it’s empty most of the time!). You can get the pattern for AU$9.75 by clicking here.

I’m a huge fan of Anna Graham’s patterns (you might know her as Noodlehead) and this new Explorer Tote is just awesome. I don’t know if I’ll be making it for any friends, but I might need to make one for myself for while I’m away. You can get the pattern for AU$12.96 by clicking here. Be sure to also check out the Super Tote pattern (one of my faves to make) you can buy it for AU$11.66 by clicking here.

Handmade Not by Me Gifts

Now, here’s the list of gifts likely to get purchased because, as per my usual, I’ll leave everything to the last minute and run out of time.

Undoubtably the queen of the Sew Together Bag is Kristy of Rock Scissors Baby. I love this Lizzy House version (which you can buy for AU$77.73 by clicking here). She does some amazing rainbow ones as well, deciding which one to order for my friend and which to order for me would be a massive dilemma. Click here to see all of Kristy’s Sew Together Bags (you can even order a custom one!).

If I run out of time there’s no shortage of skilled makers selling versions of the Necessary Clutch (which is super handy if you’re me!). I love this Tula Pink version (look at how well that print has been lined up!). You can buy this for AU$84.21 by clicking here.

Before I left Rock Scissors Baby I had a bit of a snoop in the custom order section and found this rainbow version of Noodlehead’s Super Tote. Um, I want! Love that it also comes with the ever handy cross body strap (I love a good cross body bag). You can order your own custom super tote for AU$110.12+ by clicking here.

Ok the next few things I had to share because they made me chuckle… which would be totally appropriate for any of my besties as they’re always making me laugh.

I am so lucky to have found a handful of people who are my kind of crazy. I love the simplicity of this necklace. You can buy this for AU$36.27 by clicking this link.

I’m also lucky to call a few octopuses friends so this would totally be appropriate. You can buy this for AU$49.23 by clicking this link.

Keeping on the sea life theme this card made me chuckle. You can buy this for AU$5.09 by clicking this link.

Now I’ve wasted a few hours that I could have been sewing gifts instead of window shopping gifts I should really get back to the sewing machine. Let me know if you have any good suggestions on things I can make to show someone I love them!

PS. The fabric pictured in the title image is called “Friends from Around the World” and you can buy it for AU$13.60 by clicking here.

  1. Just discovered your site, and I LOVE it! I like Noodlehead / Anna Graham’s Petal Pouch for quick gifts. Sometimes I just use a pretty fabric, or if I have a bit more time I may paint some canvas and use that, or even piece together a little quilted exterior. I recently purchased the pattern for the Double Zip Pouch with gifting in mind: Isn’t it nifty!

I always have such great intentions for getting a head start on making gifts, but (sounds like you!) spend such copious time pondering / looking around that I get myself in a time crunch! The planning is so fun! Have a wonderful visit to the US!
