#100Days100Blocks a Tula Pink City Sampler Instagram Sew-Along

#100Days100Blocks - Sew a block a day for one hundred days using Tula Pink's City Sampler as your guide. Find out more on www.GnomeAngel.com

For 100 days starting on 17 August myself, Lisa (of Sweet Little Pretties) and Raylee (of Sunflower Quilting) will be sewing one quilt block a day from Tula Pink’s City Sampler and we’re asking you to join us on this crazy adventure.  They say that to get good at anything you need to invest 10,000 hours and the only way you’ll clock up those hours is to do it, so this is us working towards our 10,000 hours. It’s also a great way to have a virtual stitching party that lasts for over 3 months!

We know that not everyone is going to be as motivated as us to stitch a block a day so we’ve asked some of our great friends to help come up with ways to entice you to make the 100 blocks. In what I’m pretty sure is a first for this kind of sew-along Spotlight Australia have kindly donated a Brother SL500 sewing machine valued at $549 (AU) to be given away to one lucky Australian participant. How amazing is that? You could literally win a new sewing machine just for sewing all 100 blocks! (Don’t despair if you don’t live in Australia – we haven’t forgotten about you, keep reading!)

That’s not all, we’ve got more amazing Sponsors on board to supply prizes to help keep you focused on the finish line. We have over $1,500(AU) in prizes to give away internationally. That’s huge! You’ll find out all the details on our amazing sponsors and on how you can win outlined below. But first let’s cover the important details.

When is it?

Starts: Block 1 will be posted on Wednesday 17 August 2016 Australian Eastern Standard Time (Sydney’s timezone).

Ends: Block 100 will be posted on Thursday 24 November 2016 (Thanksgiving Day) Australian Eastern Standard Time (Sydney’s timezone).

Blocks can be posted at any time during the day, they just have to be posted on the correct day.

A Note About Timezones

All dates, as written in this blog post and for the purpose of our organising, will be in Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST). This is the timezone for Sydney, Australia. The beauty of doing this via Instagram is that it will date stamp your block with the day and time you post it. To be eligible for prizes you need to have posted the correct block for the correct date in your timezone. It’s simple and means you don’t have to worry about doing any time conversions, etc. Just post your block on the date we’ve advised and you’ll be good to go.

Where can I get the book?

There’s a number of places you can get the book.

You can buy the book via these links Book Depository (click here) Amazon (click here) | Fons & Porter (click here) | Keepsake Quilting (click here) | Interweave Store (click here) and if you do so I will make a small commission on the sale which will go towards helping me to run this amazing event. (Thank you so much!)

Alternatively, you can purchase the book via one of our sponsors websites found below and help them to keep providing you with amazing products at fabulous prices.

Where’s it happening?

Instagram is where it’s at. It will only be run on Instagram. There’s no tutorials and there’s no blog hops. It’s all about sharing your blocks on Instagram. You will need an Instagram account to be able to participate. Instagram is free to join and you can find it in your app store on your phone.

What if my account on Instagram is Private?

I’m really sorry, but if your account is private we won’t be able to see your blocks and therefore you won’t be eligible to enter the competitions. One way around this, if you’re really keen to participate but don’t want to share your private moments (which is completely understandable), is to create a second account and just post your blocks on this account. Instagram now makes it really easy to flip between accounts so it shouldn’t be too cumbersome to manage. You can read the Instagram help file on how to do this by clicking here.

What’s the order?

We will be sewing the blocks in numerical order. So block 1 on day 1, etc. etc. until we get to block 100 on day 100.

How will I remember the order?

Every 10 days Lisa, Raylee and I will post a reminder to Instagram advising of what blocks are up next, which Sponsor has sponsored those 10 blocks and what prize could be on offer for those ten blocks. If you get lost you can just refer back to our accounts to see where we’re up to.

Alternatively I’ve made up a document that you can print out and use to keep track of where you’re at. Click here to download Block Calendar and Tracker.

How You Can Win!

I’m a big believer in working hard for anything that’s worth something and so to win a prize in this sew-along you’re going to have to do the hard yards. (It’s for your own good, I promise!) While it might seem like a pain in the butt, think of it this way; the pool of eligible people could be really small! For a majority of the prizes you’re going to have to make the 100 blocks and post them on the correct 100 days. However, because we’re not completely crazy there will be a few prizes along the way that we’ll put up for grabs for those that sew and post on the correct days a certain group of 10 blocks.

Minimum eligibility requirements:

To be eligible for any prize you must post a photo of the block on the day that the block is due (in your timezone) and hashtag it with #100days100blocks. You must also be following @gnomeangel, @sweetlittlepretties and @sunflowerquilting on Instagram.

Each prize will also come with it’s own requirements so be sure to pay attention to the details that are provided throughout the event.

If you’re following our Instagram accounts you’ll get all the information you need to keep up-to-date with the giveaways. You won’t need to go anywhere else for the information, it’ll all be on Instagram. But, because we know that people like to have a point of reference you’ll be able to come back here at any time and read up on what’s happening. All the information can be found under #100Days100Blocks in the menu at the top of this page.

Alternatively, just check out this all-in-one handy page that contains all the sponsor, prize and how to win information – click here.

Previously Made or Made Ahead of Time Blocks

We know there’s a lot of you that have started sewing blocks previously and want to use this event to help you get them all done. We’re also aware that you, like us, will have life events crop up during the 100 days which will see you not able to sew a block on it’s set day. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

You can still use these blocks, you just need to post a photo of the block on the correct day with the correct entry requirements to be eligible for inclusion in the prize pool.

You cannot add the hashtag to a block you’ve previously shared on Instagram. It needs to be a new photo date stamped with the correct date. This rule is only applicable to those of you wanting to be included in the prize pool.

You cannot use a photo of a block that is in a finished quilt or quilt top. Sorry, this is all about sewing along and while we’re open to helping people who’ve started or people who’ve got an unavoidable interruption that they can plan for, we’re not awarding prizes for quilts that are already finished. This is all about the quilt blocks.  Thanks for your understanding!

Ultimately we’re not the Quilt Police, if you want to sew all your blocks in one weekend – that’s totally up to you. This is all about sewing the blocks, having fun with fabric and getting more involved with the online quilting community. In a nutshell, we’re just here to have fun and encourage you to spend more time being creative!

 I’ve got a question!

Awesome, we’ve hopefully got an answer for you. If your question hasn’t been covered in this post then be sure to check out our Frequently Asked Questions page (click here). We’ll keep updating it as we get more questions. If that still doesn’t cover it for you then either leave a comment on this post or leave a comment over on Instagram.

    Hi Angie

Not sure if I missed it, but who were the lucky winners of the make modern subscriptions for blocks 11-20

    Janet

    1. GnomeAngel September 12, 2016 at 7:58 pm

Hi Janet – Winners are announced the first Monday AFTER a group of 10 ends. Announcement is made at 7pm AEST. The winners have just been announced. 🙂

  2. Jana September 5, 2016 at 5:13 am

Hey, i am @janaguckt at ig, so i started late and i am not in for the prizes, but for the fun and community, so thank you heaps for organizing this huge event!
I read (and sewed) a little ahead, and i have one urgent and burning question. It may be a stupid one, because i am a complete unexperienced and selftaught wuilter, but i was wondering about the triangles…tula shows flying geese without any overlapping…say, the rectangle is 2×4, then the pieces for making the geese are 2×2….in the diagrams the points are exactly ON the edge- so how do i not loose them with the quarterinch seam allowance? Is that understandable? English is my second language and quilty my third, do sorry, if i sound strange 😄 What i mean is simply: where is the seam allowance so i dont loose my points???
    Thank you very much! Jana

  3. Ethel Hough September 3, 2016 at 5:29 am

Sounds like something I would like to do. Still working on 1930s quilt which I am enjoying, but a switch off now and then would be nice. Ethel 😀

  4. Mary Smith August 18, 2016 at 11:06 pm

Oh darn! I just found out and I’m already lost. Is there any point to participating if you start late? Or am I Ajay ineligible for all the prizes?

    1. GnomeAngel August 19, 2016 at 9:23 am

Hi Mary – Some of the prizes are not reliant on you completing all 100 blocks (details are outlined above) so yes, if you’re wanting to win something then that is still possible.

  5. Jacqueline August 11, 2016 at 1:07 pm

Ordered my book but still a few days away from receiving it (downside to being in Australia). Anywhere I can get the info on the first few blocks so I can start cutting and not start off already behind? Want to prepare but am stuck. Please help. 🙂

    1. Alison August 11, 2016 at 5:33 pm

Amazon had the first few blocks viewable in their ‘look inside’ feature on their UK website.

  6. Bridget August 10, 2016 at 8:16 am

How much fabric is needed to complete all the blocks?

    1. GnomeAngel August 10, 2016 at 10:31 am

I don’t know. It’s not in the book. But I’m doing the Farmer’s Wife 1930’s Sampler Quilt (which is 99 6.5″ blocks) and I’ve used nearly a 50 Fat Quarter Bundle, so I’d recommend having at least 50 Fat Quarters of fabric.

      1. Judy August 12, 2016 at 9:18 pm

        Hi Angie

I have entered the 100 blocks into my EQ7 and the fabric list indicates that it takes about 8 metres of fabric. That’s 32 fat quarters so 50 fat quarters should be heaps.

I’m planning to do this quilt challenge but I have never used Instagram. I don’t use Facebook or Twitter either. I am more of a computer than a phone user. I have tried to find out if I can Instagram on the computer but there seem to be some issues with it. Any suggestions?

        1. Judy August 14, 2016 at 11:29 pm

Good news. I have made an instagram account and trialled my first photo post. Still nervous but hopefully it will work.

  7. Carol Marcellus August 8, 2016 at 12:00 am

This sounds exciting. I love Tula Pink. I have an Instagram account. What is the Instagram account(s) I would need to add?

    1. GnomeAngel August 10, 2016 at 10:32 am

Hi Carol – if you download the tracker printable in the blog post above I’ve updated it to include all the account and hashtag information you need to know to be eligible for prizes. Hope this helps!

  8. Pamela Meyer August 1, 2016 at 10:44 am

I’ve had the book but this inspires me to make the blocks. Thank you! I’m excited to begin.

    1. GnomeAngel August 10, 2016 at 10:32 am

      Awesome! Welcome aboard!

  9. Alison July 30, 2016 at 4:37 pm

Perfect timing for me – while I have a tonne of other stuff I should be doing, this will take my mind off both daughters starting University & leaving home in September and make me focus on something specific. The book is ordered and I am starting to sort my stash ready!
