THE DAPHNE BAG BY CLOVER & VIOLET

When Jennie from Violet & Clover asked me to be a stop on the Perfect Pattern Parcel #7 Inspiration Tour to help promote their latest pattern I was over the moon. I’ve only just found Clover & Violet (thank you social media!) but I have loved seeing their bag’s come to life.
The thing I love most about Violet & Clover patterns is that their bags use patchwork as a design feature; it’s like being able to walk around town with your favourite quilt slung over your shoulder!
But the best thing about The Daphne Bag is that the pattern is now available through Perfect Pattern Parcel #7. What’s that I hear you ask, well let me tell you.

Here’s how it works:
Perfect Pattern Parcel #7 includes:
Barcelona Bag and Wallet by Pat Bravo
Butterfly Sling Purse by Emmaline Patterns
Evelyn Hangbag by ChrisW Designs
Midtown Messenger Bag by Betz White
Betty Bowler by Swoon Sewing Patterns
BONUS PATTERN: Daphne Bag by Clover & Violet
Choose a price of $32 or greater forย Perfect Pattern Parcel #7 and you will automatically also be sent the Bonus Pattern! That’s only $5 a pattern.
The Bonus Pattern for this Parcel is the brand new Daphne Bag pattern from Clover & Violet. The Daphne is a slouchy satchel that can be worn cross body or as a shoulder bag. The zip top keeps your gear secure and the internal pockets keep your accessories where you need them. This is a brand new, never been seen before pattern and is an exclusive opportunity forย Perfect Pattern Parcel #7 customers!
All patterns are in a digital format (this means you download them, save them to your computer and print them as you need to).Perfect Pattern Parcel also encourages you to donate a portion of your chosen price to the charityย Perfect Pattern Parcel supports, Donors Choose.
Donors Choose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
Perfect Pattern Parcel covers all of the costs and fees associated with running the two week sale so that the designers don’t have to, they then donate the rest of their profits toย Donors Choose. It’s Perfect Pattern Parcel’s goal to raise over $20,000 forย Donors Choose this year.
How great is that? Not only do you get a fabulous collection of digital patterns at a great price you’re also helping support indie designers (which means they’ll be able to continue to produce fabulous patterns) and a great charity that’s helping children learn (which is great for the future of the humanity)!
Need more convincing, well here’s how I went making the Daphne Bag.

When I saw the pattern I was so excited to be able to make a bag that I could use as a cross-body carry all. Running around after a 2 year old means that I need both hands as free as possible for as long as possible and so a cross-body bag gives me this freedom.
One of the blocks I’ve been dying to have a go at making is the Granny Square block so I was completely sold when I realized that the panels are just that – granny squares!

I found this great photographic repeating New York skyline print on canvas at Spotlight and I just knew I needed to use it for the bottom of the bag. I wanted to give the bag a bit of a quirky feature.
I couldn’t make up my mind about which Cotton + Steel print to use so I kept the black and white fabrics and placement the same and just used the two Cotton + Steel prints; one for each side.

The fabulous stripy, herringbone, black and white print is also from Spotlight. I picked up a couple of metres of it to use as binding, but I couldn’t go past it for using on this bag. (I am definitely adding more of it to my fabric stash!)
I did a really simple quilting pattern (as suggested in the pattern) which I love. There’s so much room to play on this panel that you could go to free motion quiltling town (it’s a couple of miles over from Funky Town) and really make your bag one of a kind.
I’m really happy with how this bag turned out and I’m so loving using it to carry around all my “essentials” (seriously how much stuff do I need in my handbag?!?!?).
I lined the inside of the bag with Cotton + Steel’s little tiger print. (And then promptly forgot to get a photo of the inside of the bag because I was laughing too hard with my model!)

I found the pattern really helpful and Jennie has made some great additions to the pattern since I used it to make it even easier to follow. I learned a new technique, using binding to finish off the zipper and outer seam, which is always fun and makes me feel like I’ve unlocked the next level in sewing.
So, if this looks like a bag you’d like to make then just pop on over to Perfect Pattern Parcel and buy a fabulous bundle of bag patterns (there’s even a Pat Bravo set of patterns in there!) and help support indie designers and a great children’s charity.
Big thanks to my fabulous model – Gemma (of Pretty Bobbins) – you’re the Julia Roberts of handmade bag modeling.

fab bag angie – love your use of the NY skyline and Gemma is an awesome bag model
Oh my gosh, Angie! “itโs like being able to walk around town with your favourite quilt slung over your shoulder!” I freakin love this quote! And that is totally why I like to make my bags patchwork! It showcases my skills, gives me a one-of-a-kind purse, and when I’m stressed, I can totally pet my purse. ^_^
Wow! I love your bag so much. I sort of want to rip it off the model and run with it. I’d throw all the contents out and just take the bag, so it’s not realy a mugging. Just a serious case of bag-envy.
I had not heard of Perfect Pattern Parcel before your post. I love making bags, so I’m going to check it out as soon as I’m done commenting.
LOL – Well, no, technically it’s just bag theft ๐ If postage wasn’t such a pain in the butt I’d offer to send it to you. It’s a really great pattern. I brought extra supplies to make myself another couple of versions, thought they’d be great for Christmas gifts. ๐
What fun fabrics you used. I am going to make this bag too, but I chose another one to make for the tour. I post mine tomorrow. Maybe after all the other things that need to be finished, I’ll start on the Daphne.
There were a couple in the parcel that I wouldn’t mind making (the Betty Bowler has been on my radar for awhile). Who knows, maybe next year. I’m looking forward to seeing what you make! ๐
Nice fabric choices! I like the cotton & steel paired with the black and white.
Thanks Sara – I’m really happy with how it turned out. Thought it might be a little “too busy” when I was making the panels, but it’s come together nicely. Plus black and white means it goes with almost anything.
That is such a nice cross body bag! Most of my bags are made of cloth and I just love them. I love bright colours too! You are one talented lady!
Thanks Rose – I love being able to make something that I can wear out of the house that proudly proclaims I’m a quilter without screaming that I’m crazy and have a hundred cats kind of quilter. ๐
I love your fabric choices, Angie! That skyline at the bottom is so cute!
Thanks Amy – I love it too. I have a heap left over (I seem to always buy more than I need) so I’ve been trying to come up with fun projects to use it in. Maybe some zippered pouches….
Fussy cutting is always fun but has so much impact on bags especially. And you don’t need a huge bit of fabric to get those two or three focal squares. Very economical use of those ‘special’ (i.e. hoarded) fabrics!
Yes! I am totally addicted to fussy cutting so I will find any excuse to use the technique. I did forget to mention that this pattern is great for using up left over charm squares (whoops).
Gemma, I aspire to look as awesome as you when walking down the street!
Great job Angie. You’ve even convinced a non-bag maker like me that bags aren’t as scary as they seem!
I don’t know whether you can tell or not, but we were laughing pretty hard while doing this.
Thanks Miss Caroline – you could totally make this (or any other bag) you’ve got the mad skillz.
