Square in Square for Jen Kingwell’s Gypsy Wife
Square in Square are the blocks of choice for this week in the Jen Kingwell’s Gypsy Wife Quilt Sew-along. You’re going to need to make 35 of these blocks in a combination of sizes. Basically, make all the blocks on page 22. I used the Marti Michell templates to assist with accuracy and fussy cutting with these blocks and I’ve shared below the conversion details so you can do the same if you’d like. I had so much fun with these blocks and really enjoyed seeing them come together when assembling the quilt. They provide so much interest through fabric choices and I must admit I’m a little addicted to them.

To understand how I made the conversion work you’re going to have to do one little thing first. Take a pencil and write the numbers 1 to 4 against the block sizes you’ll need. (It’s the line in bold that says “NN” finished. Make 1:”) You’ll have 4 sizes of square in square blocks to make and here’s the template details to make these blocks:
- Block size 1 = Marti Michell Perfect Patchwork Set Q: use template QA and QD
- Block size 2 = Marti Michell Perfect Patchwork Set A: use template A3 and A6
- Block size 3 = Marti Michell Perfect Patchwork Set Q: use template Q93 and Q95
- Block size 4 = Marti Michell Perfect Patchwork Set B: use template B10 and B13
Notes on Assembly
We’re not due to start on the construction of the quilt top until December 14 2017, but I’ve been working on it behind-the-scences to make sure that we’re able to troubleshoot any issues that may arise for people. I’ve updated the line drawing to reflect where there’s an error in the pattern and included more information about block sizes as well.
For those of you that are using this line diagram to help work out your strips I wanted to remind you that the small print on this diagram is that there’s been some changes to the strips. Please be mindful of this when it comes to assembly.
