How doTERRA helped me break my creative slump

It’s no secret that I’ve been making big changes in 2018. At the end of 2017 it became apparent that the way I was living was not sustainable and it was damaging to both myself and my family. I was working all the time, I wasn’t eating well, I wasn’t exercising and I wasn’t sleeping. It was horrible and I was falling apart both mentally and physically. Something had to change. As is often the way in life, when you’re open to something happening it usually does. I was looking for something to help me get back to the life I’d once had and so when I saw Lizzy House do an Instagram Story about how she’d been using doTERRA Motivate to help her combat her creative slump I filed it away in my subconscious for later.

I’ve always loved aromatherapy, not because I particularly subscribe to any theories about the healing properties, I just really like the house to smell nice. I had always had candles or melts in the house until I got pregnant. Then in the manic panic that is conceiving a child via IVF I stopped doing anything that could remotely be “bad” for the baby. I stopped using candles and oils around the house. I didn’t really think much of it in the long term. Occasionally I’d really miss the smell of a particular oil or candle, but I wasn’t game enough to have an open flame around a toddler. So when Lizzy mentioned essential oils I wasn’t closed off to the idea, but I also wasn’t jumping at spending money on something other than fabric.

I was knee deep in a creative funk like I’ve never experienced before. I had lost my way and nothing I did seemed to snap me out of it. Around the end of December, start of January, I started to read more about motivation and creative inspiration. I started learning more about the things I wanted to do. I also made a decision to change the way I was living. In one of those cosmic coincidence moments Bree, of Starbrite Warrior, reached out to say hello and let me know she was a wellness advocate for doTERRA. I’d met Bree in 2015 at the ProBlogger event on the Gold Coast. Bree was a health and wellness blogger and we’d hit it off while at the conference. I was interested to hear her story about how she’d made big changes in her life and how she’s used doTERRA oils and products to help her do so.

This was the second person I knew who was talking about the benefits of doTERRA. My interest was peaked. I told Bree I was interested in trying the Motivate blend that I’d heard Lizzy talk about. Bree kindly sent me some samples of the oils so that I could try them out and see whether they were something that I thought might work for me. Now I’ll confess I didn’t go into this with any other thoughts then I’d buy one or two, just to make the house smell nice again. I was still worried about the impact of essential oils on my little guy, plus I didn’t want to have an open flame in the house.

When the oils arrived I didn’t even rush to use them. I just put them aside and figured I’d get to it eventually. The little guy started school in February and I finally had the house to myself for more than 30 minutes so I figured I’d give the oils a shot. I was struggling to get my head in the right place for all the work I needed to do and I thought that I’d try Motivate and see what happened. I put the blend in an oil burner and sat down at my computer. Now, I’m not going to make some big claim here that I had the most productive day I’ve ever had and that I worked non-stop until school pick up. What I will tell you is that I had a good day. I had a day where I happily sat at the computer and worked. My headspace felt lighter and cleared of the fog that I’d been working under for the previous months.

Now, I don’t know if it was because of the oil or because I had made the decision to sit down to work. I’m not sure if it was a placebo effect, but I don’t really care either. The studio smelt great and I had a great day. I didn’t want for more than that. So I placed an order with doTERRA. I got myself a petal diffuser (so I wouldn’t have to worry about those naked flames) and I got a selection of oils to start me off. I also got some of the touch roller ball oils (they’re diluted for use on the skin) because Hubby had been going through a particularly rough patch at work and I thought that he might benefit from a little bit of Motivate Touch behind the ears. I also picked up an InTune roller ball because it’s supposed to help with focus and if it’s one thing all of us in this house could benefit from it’s a little more focus.

Hubby is even less open to “hippy dippy” stuff than I am and so when they arrived and I told him about them I expected him to nod and then go on about his day. So colour me surprised when the next day he applied both the Motivate and InTune before heading off to work. I asked him about it when he got home and he said that he’d felt they’d helped. We both agreed that we didn’t know whether it’s the placebo effect or legitimate responses, but we both didn’t care. The thing was we were both having better experiences and that was the main thing.

Over the coming weeks I found myself using the oils more and more in the diffuser while I worked. It’s been great. There’s been days here when I’ve been in the most horrid of moods. My health problems combined with the frustration of not being able to do all that I want has caused my mood to be a little darker than I’d like. On these days I mix up a blend of oils designed to help lift my funk and it’s been working. Some days it works a little better than others, but on the whole I’ve found that my mood is always improved with the diffusing of the oils.

I’ve now started to use Clary Calm to help with my endometriosis. I still get pain, but it’s manageable. Now that could be because of my cycle of pain or it could be the impact from the oils. I don’t know and I really don’t care. I’ve been using it as a replacement to my chemical filled deodorant and I enjoy knowing that I’m not spraying chemicals on my skin each day. I’ve also purchased a second diffuser to use in the Little Man’s room at night time to help with his sinuses and it’s been great as well. Our GP told us to apply eucalyptus oil to his chest to help with breathing and we’ve found that Easy Air in the diffuser works really well to help him get a restful night’s sleep.

Now that we’re a house that has cats I am very mindful of never diffusing the oils with the cats in the room. There’s always great ventilation and they have the ability to leave the area and go to their safe room if they want to. I spoke to our Vet about using the oils and took his advice. I don’t think I’d ever apply oils topically to the cats, but I know that others swear by it. It’s one of those things where you’d have to talk to your Vet and do your own research about it.

I know that I’m not using our doTERRA oil collection to it’s full extent. I’m working on converting our household cleaners to doTERRA oil based products so that I can help reduce the toxins in our home. I’m also investigating ways to safely incorporate doTERRA oils into my cooking. It’s been a really great addition to our house and I’m a firm believer in happy home, happy life. I’m sharing all of this today because I get so many emails and comments from people who can identify with the struggles I’ve been going through because they’re going through their own and so I’m starting to share more about the things that I’ve found and that are working in our house.

I’ve talked with Bree about sharing with my community about the things she’s taught me and the things that I’m learning and we’ve decided to run a Facebook Live information session about doTERRA on Thursday May 10 @ 9:30am AEST. (You can RSVP to the event via this link.) We’re going to share information about how we use doTERRA oils and products and how you can get your hands on these amazing oils and products. I know that there’s a few of you in my community that are looking for side hustles to help make some extra money for fabrics and household expenses and doTERRA can provide a great opportunity to make some extra cash.

I’m not going into the doTERRA business. I’ve really benefited from using doTERRA and I want to share that with you all in the hopes that it might help someone else make the changes they want to make. To access the great wholesale prices on doTERRA you can sign up to be a part of my team and we can do this together. I’m going to be keeping my team numbers really low because this isn’t my core business, I want to connect with people who are looking to make changes in their lives and want someone to walk with them while they do it. I’m not pushing doTERRA because I need the cash or I want to transition into the oils business, I’m sharing it to help the one or two of you that are in the same place I’ve been and want to try something to get out of that spot.
