CRAFTY | HEX ON THE COUCH

…finished this one at the Canberra Quilters Modern Quilt Group meeting…

Way back in July of last year, while I was under the influence of the heady new delights of first time parenthood, I made a crazy decision to make Katy Jones’ “Hexy MF” quilt.  I cut and basted all the hexagons and then promptly put them in a tin (a beautiful display they were) and put them away.

Over the past year I’ve been slowly completing one hex flower here and there at Guild Meetings and crafty outings, but I haven’t made any real progress.  With the mad rush that was getting caught up on my Woodland Sampler I found a love for sitting and hand stitching that I’ve never had before.

With the Woodland Sampler out of the way I decided I’d see if I could get some of my hex flowers done in the little bit of time I get each day when the chores are out of the way and the Little Man is sleeping.

I stitched while watching “Call the Midwife”.

…it’s a quilt!…

I stitched while watching “Antiques Roadshow”.  I just happened to catch an episode where they were valuing a quilt made of fabric scrap by a soldier in the First World War.

I stitched while the Little Man played on the Wii.  (He’s not actually playing on the Wii – I was using the Wii board to try and hold the playpen in place to stop him pulling it away from the wall and making a mad dash past the television and in to our office space where all the “good” stuff is kept. It didn’t work!)

I stitched while watching “The West Wing”.

I stitched while the Little Man slept when he came down with “slapped cheek“.  (The worst week ever.  I basically stopped doing everything while I watched over the Little Man.  He got slapped cheek, then came down with a viral infection of the throat, had 2 trips to the ER and then finished it all off with a pretty gnarly cough. I hate seeing him sick it just breaks my heart…)

I stitched while the Little Man caught up on his reading.  (Apparently he’d prefer to read alone than with his poor old mother…)

I finally did something with the first ever fabric I purchased to make a quilt with. I never made the intended quilt with that fabric (a beginners quilting class that was just wrong on so many folksy levels!) but I’m really glad to see it being used for a funky quilt.

I had a pretty productive couple of weeks stitching away.  I now have 20 or so hex flowers completed, but that means I still have 50 or so still to complete.

I’m loving the relaxing repetition of the stitching and I love that I can stitch while the boys play together in the evenings, or while the Little Man sleeps, or those rare times he’s happy to entertain himself.

At this rate I might have all the flowers completed before the end of the year… then I’ll just have to join them together and applique them to their background, simple really.
