Block 6 of Fat Quarter Shop Snapshots Quilt-along

Fat Quarter Shop Snapshots Quilt-along - Patchwork by Angie Wilson of GnomeAngel.com

It’s time to reveal another block in the Fat Quarter Shop’s Snapshot Quilt-along and today is Block 6 “Triple Scoop Sundae” (you can get the pattern by clicking here). I find it somewhat amusing that this is the block for June when I’m on a Junk Free June. This will be the closest I come to ice-cream in the next couple of weeks.

I’m sewing all of my blocks with fabric from the Kona 2014 New Colours Fat Quarter Bundle and using Kona White for the block’s background. I have to admit I struggled a bit to find the perfect combination of colours for my sundae, and even now I’m not sure it works quite as well as it could have. I kept the dish the same colour as the cake stand for Block 1 “Let them Eat Cake” as an ode to Martha Stewart and her love of Jadeite.

This month Fat Quarter Shop are also revealing the backing pattern and the assembly instructions. The backing pattern is a giant camera which I have been hanging out to make for weeks now! I’d be lying if I said that the backing pattern wasn’t the main reason for me choosing the Kona 2014 New Colours Fat Quarter Bundle to work with on this project. I’m only going to give you a little teaser of the backing pattern this week because I want to save some of the magic for the big reveal.

I’m using Moda’s Dottie Red Tiny Dots for my frames (on both the front and the back) and my binding. I’m using Paint Not Pink Newsprint for the backing fabric because I like the quotes and text on this fabric and I think the sentiment ties in nicely with what’s happening on the front. It’s also a print that’s not going to be too obvious when it’s pieced together for the backing. I really struggled with using this colour scheme for the camera, but I wanted something that would stand out against all that purple and it compliments what’s happening on the sides nicely.

This is the first time I’ve done this sort of backing and I’m excited to see how it all comes together when the quilts finished. Next month’s block is a hot air balloon that makes me think of Charlie Brown.

  1. Angie you always amaze me with your ability to take a pattern and up the cool factor about 100%! I love what you are doing here with this quilt. I haven’t even sewn my apron yet! I need to get a move on. There’s so many fabulous things to sew right now!

  2. just wanted to put in my two cents and say that I like the colors for the ice-cream and the camera very much! I’m so glad you are not doing the same fabríc as so many chose to do. What’s the point of seeing the exact same thing multiple times? That doesn’t help me. But when I see other color stories it’s inspiring! I’m a newbie and not always comfortable choosing my fabrics. It helps a lot to see different takes on the subject matter. So, thank you for being inspiring! I really need it 🙂

    1. Actually, it looks like several of the other bloggers have had problems staying with the schedule, which definitely includes me. I’ll just admit freely I’m not to the ice-cream block myself ? Let’s face it, sometimes life derails our sewing and that’s how it is. So, really, I’m happy to see any of the examples that come up, whatever the fabríc. I really do appreciate everybody’s willingness to help and show their block that are able to. I actually am sewing closer to the Daysail examples than yours, but I hope someday to be able to go off and do something really different that turns out cool, like yours! I’m sure, however, that you would readily agree with me that the original Daysail quilt is darling, and I hope I didn’t sound like I was bashing it. I love it! I just have that type of personality to want to do things differently from everybody else just because. So, thanks again for keeping on keeping on and providing a great example and some advice. I wish everyone that started the journey with us the absolute best. And I can’t wait to see all the finished quilts!

      1. Hi Beth, thanks for your lovely comments. I completely understand about wanting to see a variety of combinations of blocks to get a feel for them. I’m exactly the same. It’s also one of my favourite things about patchwork – you can make such a huge impact just through the fabrics you select. I hope you’re enjoying the quilt-along.
