CRAFTY | GIANT WINTERKIST STAR QUILT TOP

I actually finished this quilt top back in July but for some reason I just never got around to taking photos of it.ย I think from memory winter was just too bleak and I couldn’t find a day that had enough sun in it to give me a good shot.
This was my July quilt top for my 12 Quilts in a Year Challenge.

I used the Giant Star tutorial from In Colour Order. It goes together really quickly (once you decide on your colour placement) and it’s a decent size quilt – great for a kids bed or for the couch.

The fabric for the star isย Winterkist by Happy Zombie. I’ve had the fabric for awhile – I couldn’t pass up Christmas gnomes – I was just looking for the right project for it, and this seemed like a good fit.
The gnome print is rather large so the sizing of the block in this quilt pattern gave me a great opportunity to show off the print.

Because our Christmas is in summer I decided I wanted to go for a really summery feel instead of the traditional Northern Hemisphere snow inspired so I chose a background fabric (the name of which I cannot find for the life of me!) of blues to try and play up the water aspect of summer.
I don’t normally do borders on my quilts, I like the unframed finish of no borders, but given the fact that the points of this quilt pattern run right to the edge I didn’t want to loose them to the binding so I just popped a small border on to it.
I had toyed with the idea of quilting this one myself, but I think I’m going to send it to a long armer to get it finished in time for Christmas 2014.

This is so cool.
Our newest dog, killed my machine. This week it’s been at the shop for two weeks and they told me when I dropped it off they were behind. I think it may have killed my zig zag quilt, which has seen its own issues.
