At the beginning of the year there was this thing going around on Instagram asking people to ‘pay it forward’ to 5 people with a handmade gift. I decided that I would participate and put the call out for 5 people that wanted a handmade gift from me in exchange for making a handmade gift for someone else.

One of the people that signed up was Tamara (of One Craftee Mumma) which was awesome because I’d been wanting an excuse to make her a little something for a long time and here was the perfect one.

Tamara is a mad keen cross stitcher and loves to take her work on the road with her (which is smart planning given she’s running around for 3 boys and spends a bit of time out and about).  She was using a ziploc bag to carry all her supplies and current projects around with her so I decided I’d make her a wide mouth zippered pouch for her cross stitching.

She’s currently loving triangles, hot pink, grey and pineapples – which was handy because I happened to have something of everything in my stash.

I’d seen the black and white pineapple fabric a while back when shopping in Addicted to Fabric and had picked up a meter of it because Tamara and I have had a running joke for awhile now that “pineapples are the new black”.

I’d just learned a new way to make HST’s from the course I did with Jenny Bowker in May and I was keen to see if I could translate that into other uses.  I’ve never done improvisational piecing and so I used this project as an excuse to get my improv on.

I used Noodlehead’s open wide zipper pouch tutorial for the construction of the pouch and kind of winged it.

I did a really simple and light quilting over the front of the pouch which I think works. Overall I’m really happy with how it turned out.  I still have areas to improve on (piecing, zippers and time management) but it’s not bad for the second ever zippered pouch I’ve made.

The best thing about it – Tamara uses it. (And she even tells me she loves it!)

I think I’m going to make a few more of these in the coming weeks.  I think they’d make great little stocking fillers. Who knows I might even perfect my zipper sewing skills!
