NOTHING SAYS I LOVE YOU LIKE IVF

Dreams are like ice-creams

Today was all about paperwork and starting the process.ย  Which is kind of arse about face because I’ve been taking medication for the past month in the lead up to this month, so technically we were already on our way.

This month I need to keep taking the pill (which I managed to get more of despite having lost my stash and my script) and then on Wednesday 23 February I have an appointment with the Specialist and his scratch test.ย  I’m not looking forward to the scratch test, but a little bit of discomfort for a long term gain I’m sure I can grin and bear it.

Once I have the scratch test I have to go through another bleed and then on day 3 I get to start the injections again.ย ย  We’re having injections this time as they’re more reliable than taking Clomid.ย  Injections don’t bother me, it’s a five minute incovienance that’s forgotten about by the time I get to lunch.ย  The only thing that’s got me cheesed about the injections is the fact that we have to pay for them in addition to the cost of the Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) cycle.ย  Normally all the medication is included in the cost of the cycle, but because we’re having a different medication we now have to pay for the injections on top of the cycle cost.

It’s just money, but it makes me somewhat cranky that we have to pay extra.ย  I really should focus on the fact that unlike some countries we get some financial subsidy from Medicare.ย  I guess it’s just another way to test my resolve this round to just let everything slide on off.

While we waited for the Embryologist to turn up the nurse tried to make small talk.ย  She asked about our previous cycles and she confirmed what we’d been suspecting but the Specialist didn’t get into details.ย  My progestrone levels have no been great for helping to sustain a pregnancy.ย  Last cycle they started off better than the previous cycle, but they still went down.ย  We talked about whether the Specialist will up the progesterone medication to stop it from happening again. (He’s already said I will be taking 3 pessaries a night this round.)

She said that by the time they test and notice the level going down it’s usually too late for the Specialist to try and up the medication, but she said it might happen this time because it’s our last attempt.ย  I’m not sure whether any of it is information that will help me get through the cycle without being a stress pot, but at least it’s good to know that we were right in thinking there was an issue.ย  We didn’t really get any further before the Embryologist came in.

We spoke to the Embryologist about how many we’ll be defrosting.ย  We have 6 on ice and we’re putting 2 back.ย  The Embryologist has told us that she’ll defrost 2 and see how they handle that and if we don’t have 2 survive she’ll keep defrosting until we get 2.

I’m excited at the thought of having 2 put back, but I’m also a little nervous about it.ย  We could totally end up with twins and what then?ย  I suspect this could end up being one of those things that turns out to prove the old adage “be careful what you wish for” true.

Be Filled with Joy

I’d kind of forgotten what it was like to have to be back on the blood testing merry-go-around.ย  I just hate being back in that waiting room.ย  I don’t know what it is but it makes me intolerant and cranky.ย  I must be a dream to be around.ย  I don’t know what it is… maybe I should start a little competition with myself to out sunshine the happiest person on the planet whenever I’m in there.ย  Make a game of it to see how happy I can be.ย  Nah, doubt that will make me actually happy I’ll just come off looking like an angry crazy loon.

Both of us have taken it as a positive sign that we had our paper signing today; Valentine’s Day.ย  It’s kind of fitting on this day of love we started something that may turn out to be the greatest expression of our love ever.ย  (How fucking sappy is that!)ย  We’ve had so many other “special” days with the other cycles that I’ve got to be frank here and say that I’m losing a little bit of confidence in the coincidence signs.ย  Although next month is our 6 year wedding anniversary….

  1. Oh best of luck to you with this cycle! I did all 6 of my IUI’s and 1 IVF without knowing how bad my progesterone levels were. Once they figured out that problem, we were pregnant (naturally) two months later. Hopefully diagnosing your low levels and having them monitored will result in one or two little beans for you too! Sending lots and lots of sticky vibes your way ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

And you have every right to be grumpy in that stupid waiting room. I hated having to go in there every day or every other day over and over and over and over….was never so happy to be done with that!

  2. *Big hugs*

Good for you for going for your dream. Lots of good thoughts coming your way that this time you get what you wish for ๐Ÿ™‚

And I reckon you’ve earned the right to be a little grumpy. Geeez…having extra hormones means you’re allowed!

  3. ps have never heard of the scratch test. Just went and read. Must be fairly new in Canberra – it was never mentioned when I did it!

    1. The Specialist said that he’d been reading the new literature over the Christmas break and had decided to give it a go. The nurse at the Clinic today said she’d seen a couple of couples give it a go. I figure it’s all a crap shoot…

  4. Good luck!

I hated the waiting room. I hated that so many couples never came back and we were there again and again over the years we did it. We’d see the shiny new couples coming in full of hope and try not to feel desperately bitter.

Also that whole no eye contact unspoken rule was creepy. Don’t acknowledge if you see someone there you know from work; don’t smile and say good morning. Just read the same magazine you’ve read for the last six months and hope to God you never have to come back.

Yeah, fun places. I hope the FET goes well for you.

    1. Thanks. I’m trying to be realistic about it all… ha!

I hate sitting in the waiting room. There’s some days where all I want to do is ask the woman sitting beside me what she’s there for and how long it’s taken, etc. But I am so paranoid about upsetting someone. It’s mental. I just take a book now and read my way through the wait.
