BLOCK 4 OF FAT QUARTER SHOP SNAPSHOTS QUILT-ALONG

Can you believe it’s been a month already since I shared myย Fat Quarter Shop Snapshots Quilt-Alongย blocks? I can’t! This year is disappearing so quickly, it’s crazy.
For those of you not familiar with the Fat Quarter Shop Snapshots Quilt-Alongย it’s really quite simple. For all of 2015 Fat Quarter Shopย will be revealing a block a month of the Snapshots Quilt whichย was designed by the legendary Mother-Daughter duo Bonnie & Camille.ย The quilt is made up of 12 novelty blocks that capture and celebrate moments of happiness in our lives and is called โSnapshotsโ.ย Fat Quarter Shopย are asking people to donate US$5 for each block that they download the pattern for with all moneyย benefitingย St. Jude Childrenโs Research Hospital. (A fabulous cause!)
Block 4 is called “Puppy Love” and you can get the pattern by clicking here. It’s such a cute block and so much neater than having a real puppy in the house.ย I’m sewing all of my blocks with fabric fromย theย Kona 2014 New Colours Fat Quarter Bundleย and using Kona White for the block’s background. It’s been such a fun challenge to constrain myself to using just the colours in the bundle. I would never have picked the colour combination for this block otherwise and I’m really digging how it turned out.

My one tip for this block is to pay careful attention to how the paws are facing when you join them to the basket. It took me a couple of goes to get them facing the right way up (I’m totally clinging to “lack of sleep” and “battling head cold” for my excuse!).
Because I started making myย ย Robert Kaufman Kona Solidsย version after theย Fat Quarter Shop Snapshots Quilt-Alongย had already started I needed to go back and redo Block 1, “Let Them Eat Cake”.

I had a bit of fun with this block trying to pick colours that would be “appetising” – I always remember Gordon Ramsay telling someone on Masterchef or some such that green is never appetising when it comes to sweets. (Guess that’s why I don’t eat salads!) Needless to say, there’s no green in the cake but I did go with a green cake stand as a tribute to Martha Stewart and her love of Jadeite. (You can see my previous version of block 1 by clicking here.)
I now have the top row of blocks done and it’s fun to see them coming together and I’m starting to get a feel for how the quilt will look. It’s pretty cool and I’m having fun doing something that’s a little out of my normal patchworking zone. I can’t wait to see how next month’s block turn’s out!

They’re lovely blocks Angie, and your photography truly makes them stand out. Thank you for linking up with Sew Cute Tuesday.
The puppy block is adorable and the cake is beautiful. I like the solids in these blocks.
I don’t mind green icing at all ๐
-Soma
Thanks Soma… I can’t say green icing would put me off cake either. ๐
Oh this is adorable!!
Thanks Alyce! <3
He/She is so cute! I am in love with puppy’s little red nose! I would never have thought of that. Your solid color version is coming out fantastic so far. I can’t wait to see it finished! And I’m so glad that you and a few others are using different fabrics from the original. It is much more interesting to see individual styles and creativity. What’s the point of watching 12 different people if they’re all doing the exact same thing? Not that I blame people for following the original exactly. It’s adorable! But it’s nice to see something different, too. And yours is turning out incredible! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Beth. I agree, it’s the diversity that makes it interesting. This would be such a fabulous quilt made from scraps. I’m so tempted to do another version with all scrappy blocks instead. I’ve seen some really cool versions in the Facebook group that have given the puppy such personality. <3
This is absolutely amazing, that pooch takes the cake, haha!
I love a good pun! Thanks for the chuckle. ๐
Your blocks are fabulous!!! I really love the solids and that cake for sure looks yummy!
Thanks Rachel! I’m loving the solids too! And now I feel like baking… ๐
I am in love with this QAL!!! Love you blocks, so cute <3
Thanks Bridgette! Are you participating in it? It’s a lot of fun and I can’t wait to see what the quilt’s like at the end.
