Farmer’s Wife 1920’s Sew-along: Block 11 – Broken Dishes

The Farmer’s Wife 1920’s Sampler Quilt Sew-along is celebrating block 11, Broken Dishes, today. This block is super simple – it’s all about half square triangles.
About Our Quilt
I’ve taken inspiration from one of my favourite china patterns; Spode’s Blue Italian. I treated myself when I turned 40 to some pieces from this collection with the intention that I’ll add to it over the years until I can complete the full set. I’ve never made a single colour quilt and I’m really excited to make this blue quilt. I’ve paired it with a light cream and that’s a first for me too. I normally use a bleach white with my work.
After the joy of making our Round We Go quilt, Caroline (@nightingalequilts) , Raylee (of Sunflower Stitcheries & Quilting) and I have teamed up again and we’ll be sharing the work of making this quilt. It’s a great way for the three of us to make time for each other because there’s not much you can do other than gab when you’re cutting, basting and stitching blocks. I can only begin to imagine what crazy things we’ll talk about while making this quilt.
I will post our blocks on Tuesday’s and Friday’s. The block posts will follow the same format every time: introduction (this bit), important information (all the stuff you need to know), how to assembly the block for EPP and then information about our major sponsor. Hopefully the consistency of information will help you find what you need every time.

Super simple block. Just join the triangles to complete the squares (for example: A1 + A2) and then join the squares in rows, then join the rows to complete the block.

For those wanting a tip on how to baste the triangles so they nest easily the above diagram shows how we’re doing it.
For the very eagle eyed amongst us you’ll note that edge 3 is folded under edge 1 – you don’t have to do it like this, it’s just how Caroline likes it. I simply fold 3 over the top of 1.

September 2018’s Sponsor + Prize: Brimfield Awakening
Hi friends! We are Kim + Nisha of Brimfield Awakening. We love the Brimfield Antiques show โ in fact, just last year we were dragging our carts across a muddy field and happened upon a trash bag of textiles that produced quilty gold! This is where we discovered โBeeโ โ the original orphaned quilt block that inspired our debut pattern, #BrimfieldBlock and, well, the rest is history!
We design English Paper Piecing patterns (EPP) that are deceivingly quick to stitch and have a unique quality to them โ our papers are perforated! This means you choose how your block looks, giving you the opportunity to put your own personal touch on the block. Our EPP sections are appliqued onto background squares, creating lots of negative space. Because they sew together fast, you can create a beautiful and detailed design without a major time commitment!
Our partners at Paper Pieces produce the highest quality papers and acrylic templates. Since the #BrimfieldBlock, we have designed #BrimfieldBlockStar and our brand-new pattern #BrimfieldMeadows. We are so happy you have stopped by to check us out and hope youโll join us on our journey on Instagram and Facebook. We are @BrimfieldAwakening โ Please enjoy a 15% discount on our website now through October 31, 2018 using the code FW1920EPPSAL. Happy stitching! Xx โ Kim + Nisha
