Farmer’s Wife 1920’s Sew-along: Block 13 – Buckwheat

The Farmer’s Wife 1920’s Sampler Quilt Sew-along is celebrating block 13, Buckwheat, today. I’m not going to lie all the pieces in this block nearly broke me. You’re looking at 5 hours of hand-stitching here (yes, that’s a lot and yes, I was entertaining a 6yo at the time, but still…).

About Our Quilt

I’ve taken inspiration from one of my favourite china patterns; Spode’s Blue Italian. I treated myself when I turned 40 to some pieces from this collection with the intention that I’ll add to it over the years until I can complete the full set. I’ve never made a single colour quilt and I’m really excited to make this blue quilt. I’ve paired it with a light cream and that’s a first for me too. I normally use a bleach white with my work.

After the joy of making our Round We Go quilt, Caroline (@nightingalequilts) , Raylee (of Sunflower Stitcheries & Quilting) and I have teamed up again and we’ll be sharing the work of making this quilt. It’s a great way for the three of us to make time for each other because there’s not much you can do other than gab when you’re cutting, basting and stitching blocks. I can only begin to imagine what crazy things we’ll talk about while making this quilt.

I will post our blocks on Tuesday’s and Friday’s. The block posts will follow the same format every time: introduction (this bit), important information (all the stuff you need to know), how to assembly the block for EPP and then information about our major sponsor. Hopefully the consistency of information will help you find what you need every time.

Assembly Order

You want to prepare your triangle pieces as per the illustration below to make this block sit properly while you work! This block is a mirror on a diagonal so I’m going to show you how to put one side together and you repeat the process for the other side and join on the middle seam. So, join as follows:

  • A1 + A2
  • A3 + A4
  • [A1A2] + [A3A4]
  • A5 + [A1A2A3A4] + A6 = A
  • B1 + B2
  • B3 + B4
  • B7 + [B1B2] + B6 + B5  [B3B4] + B8 = B
  • C1 + C2 = C

Now, pay attention to the seams and join the rows as follows:

  • A + B
  • [AB] + C

Repeat for other side and then join the two sides together on the middle seam.

For those wanting a tip on how to baste the triangles so they nest easily the above diagram shows how we’re doing it.

For the very eagle eyed amongst us you’ll note that edge 3 is folded under edge 1 – you don’t have to do it like this, it’s just how Caroline likes it. I simply fold 3 over the top of 1.

OCTOBER 2018: ALISON GLASS DESIGNS

Alison Glass is a surface designer living in Virginia with her husband, daughter, and son. Aspiring to create a career for herself, Alison started a design business in 2007 focusing on space remodels and custom home decor pieces. Her love of color and shape and the combination of the two eventually lead to making the decision to step back from the local design business and work toward her goal of creating artwork for surfaces. She is thrilled for the opportunity to design fabric for Andover and work with other companies in the sewing industry. In addition to designing fabric, Alison produces a line of sewing patterns as well as a growing range of other products.

Alison is inspired by the multitude of details in the world, both natural and those made by artisans, particularly in urban architecture. She is passionate about the ideas of making choices that are consistent with who a person is, being increasingly comfortable with ambiguity, and continuing to move forward and live in the new.
