Last year I participated in my first ever quilting bee and it was so much fun, however this year I’m forgoing participating in Bee’s in favour of doing more Block of the Month (BOM) sewing. I figured I could still have all the excitement of sewing along with all my virtual sewing buddies and make something new and fresh each month without the pressure of a mailing deadline (or being accurate). Luckily for me, in 2015 the Fat Quarter Shop are hosting the Snapshots Quilt-Along which is benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The Snapshots quilt has been designed by the Camille Roskelley (of Thimble Blossoms) and Bonnie Olaveson (of Cotton Way). The quilt is made up of 12 novelty blocks that capture and celebrate moments of happiness in our lives – I can’t make up my mind which is my favourite, but I’m quite partial to the car, camera and cake (all the c’s!).
The 12 quilt blocks are available for download on the 15th of each month. (You can find the entire block calendar via this post.) The Fat Quarter Shop is asking you to donate US$5 each time you download a quilt block to help St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Last month I made the first block, “Let Them Eat Cake” (don’t mind if I do!), and made it just from fabrics I had in my stash. Because I’m playing along with Project Leasa and Sew My Stash 2015 I thought this would be another fun way to use the fabrics I’ve been saving for that “special moment”. (You can find the full fabric requirements for the quilt by downloading the Fabric requirements PDF! )
I had so much fun putting my chocolate cake together and I’m really looking forward to finding a little pocket of time to make the latest block, a sewing machine. I’m hoping for a scrap and bright quilt at the end of the year that will remind me of all the sewing fun I had during the year.
The other great thing about these patterns is that they make a great mini all on their own. I’ve been thinking that this cake block would make a great “happy birthday” mini quilt for those special people in my world. Just add some borders and quilt as per any other mini. Perfect!
If you’d prefer to have someone else take on the pressure of choosing the perfect fabrics, the Fat Quarter Shop has a limited supply of quilt kits and pieced backing sets using the Daysail collection by Bonnie & Camille for Moda Fabrics.
The Fat Quarter Shop Snapshots Quilt-Along benefits the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to help advance cures and means of prevention for catastrophic pediatric diseases. Fat Quarter Shop and Moda Fabrics will match up to $10,000 of donations raised for this amazing cause. And, on top of that, the Fat Quarter Shop will auction their Snapshots Quilt Along Quilt at the end of the program, and 100% of the auction proceeds will go to their St. Jude campaign. So please DONATE today!
The Fat Quarter Shop, has invited a few of their favorite bloggers and designers to sew along with them for this great cause. You can check out their blogs every month starting January 2015 to see their progress.
