TUTORIAL | WASHI TAPE MAKEOVER

I couldn’t resist, I’ve been seeing letters transformed by washi tape all over the internet and I decided it was time to transform the W we’d been given for Christmas with some of the new washi that I’ve added to my collection.
Because I’m all about the sharing I’ve put together a quick little tutorial so you too can rainbow up a letter in your own home.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Paint Brush
1. Grab your wooden letter and, starting at the stop, start placing stripes ofย washi tape in the order you would like. Just place theย washi tape across the gaps in your letter.ย I lined up the pattern on each of my stripes to make it look like one continuous pattern.ย I also put a line ofย washi tape across the top of the letter.

2. Once you’ve gotten to the bottom of your letter take your Fiskar Micro Tip Scissors and cut down the middle of your letter gaps.ย Fold the excess washi tape down the sides of your letter.
3.ย Using your paint brush (or sponge brush) coat the washi tape with a light cover of the Sparkle Mod Podge.ย Allow to dry. (Remember to be careful with the Sparkle Mod Podge once it dries it’s not coming off!)
I used Mod Podge to coat and seal theย washi tape because it does have a habit of peeling back after awhile or getting easily marked.ย I just wanted to make sure thisย washi tape wasn’t going any where and would continue to look good over the years. As a bonus this Mod Podge has glitter – and who doesn’t love a bit of bling?!?! (You could always use the Matte or Gloss Mod Podge if you didn’t want your letter to sparkle like Edward Cullen!)

4. Once it’s dry you can apply another coat ofย Sparkle Mod Podge across the face of the letter – the more you put on the more glitter will be applied to the letter.ย This is just one coat:

5. Once it’s dry you can style it however you like.ย I currently have mine on the shelf in my sewing room.
I’m toying with using black paint or maybe even some black electrical tape to cover up the sides of the letter to hide the excess washi tape; although I do like the effect that is created by the excess washi tape.
Given how successful this little makeover was I’m now looking around the house for what else I can cover with washi tape and Sparkle Mod Podge!

Brilliant Ange! I have some letters but have toying with whether to washi tape them or fabric strip them. I do have a lot of washi tape …
ok…so it appears that I’m the only one on the planet who hasn’t heard of washi tape before. *sigh*
I really need to get out more.
All is not lost, really. I *AM* quite familiar with the latest re-runs of the Love Boat. Advantages of my current nocturnal life-style.
You’re very inspiring Ange! I look at my life and am flat out finding time to finish a quilt top…you’re such a busy chick! Love it!
Nope – you’re not alone – I had so many people ask me about it at the Mega Craft Day.
Funny – I’ve been watching (and loving) Green Acres!
Dude, I think that of you. I have 1 kiddo, you’ve got FOUR! I do a lot of things to avoid housework! ๐ ๐
Ooo I’m all inspired!
I wouldn’t use mod podge but I did see someone cut love hearts out of washi tape and put them on their fingernails which you could then cover with glitter nail polish. Looked really cute!
Awesome idea! If only I didn’t break my nails as much so I had something to stick the washi too! There’s so many great washi ideas out there. Love them all!
I made up a blog the other day as you can see by the link. ๐ don’t know what I’ll make of it. Maybe a mummy blog? I’m so all over the place with blog ideas and struggle with do I share too much? What’s ok? That fine line. Maybe I’m just too moody lately. This may be too personal but I had my monthly out of nowhere and totally freaked me out. Oh bother this is turning into a blog post- hey maybe I’ll make it one!
I’m still reading! ๐
The link didn’t come through on this comment AND I can’t find you on FB (unless you’re Latino?) ๐
I don’t know what to blog about any more either – it’s all seat of the pants here! Some days I’d like to pack it all in and not have the pressure I put on myself to blog. My life is too boring to blog! ๐
it makes me happy that you lined up the zig zags…I could have formed OCD looks awesome!
HUBBY thought I was nuts taking the time to line up the pattern, but I couldn’t have looked at it if it wasn’t! ๐
