On May 7 we kicked off on the #100Days100Blocks2017 adventure and as of today we’re up to Block 55 out of 100 and it’s time to announce our next group of 10 blocks winner and our first group of 50 blocks winner. We’re still in triangles, although today marks the last of the triangle blocks. I don’t know what it is about the triangle section but this is where most people fall off the wagon or struggle to keep up their motivation. If you’re struggling let me tell you what I learned last year, the next sections go so quickly after the triangles and the very last section screams past. Seriously, you’re over the hump and on the download slide into home base.

This year I’ve made it super simple for you to win; there’s prizes for groups of 10 blocks, groups of 50 and for all 100. (Click here to see the full list of prizes and entry requirements.) It’s great for those that come to the event late, those that fell off the wagon last year and for those that have life’s little mishaps spring up along the way. So without further ado, let’s find out who’s won the amazing prize of a $100 Gift Voucher to The Modern Quilter and the $100 Gift Voucher to The Strawberry Thief…

This group of 10 blocks has some of my most favourite blocks in it and I love seeing them all together in one place. I’m so very lucky and humbled to have Cotton + Steel sponsor this years quilt. I already had quite a substantial collection of their fabrics but they were kind enough to send me the missing bits and pieces as well as some of their upcoming ranges to use in my blocks. It’s been a smorgasbord of fabrics to choose from with each block. I was twice blessed when Sulky Threads agreed to come on board for the event as well. Sulky Threads have partnered with Cotton + Steel to create an amazing line of 50wt Egyptian Cotton Threads. (Click here to find out more about Cotton + Steel Thread by Sulky.) In a beautiful twist of fate there’s 100 colours available in the current range of threads which means I get to showcase a different thread colour with every block.

Triangles provided a great opportunity to try out a new technique for fussy cutting that I learned from The Fussy Cut Sampler. I’ll be talking more about this technique when I review the book as part of the blog hop in August. I’m really thrilled with the outcome for these two blocks and I’m looking forward to trying this technique a little more and getting better at it.

  1. I’m new to quilting so this question may have an obvious answer… why are you using beautiful coloured thread when piecing the blocks? I always use a very pain natural colour and was under the impression that coloured threads were just for quilting the top. Can you actually see the nice thread in the piecing design? Does it add more to the texture or design of the overall finished quilt?

    1. Hi Erin! Great question! I’m not actually using these treads to piece all the blocks (I’m showcasing the colours available on behalf of our event sponsor, Sulky Threads), I’m using a basic light grey to piece the blocks as this is my go to neutral when working with blocks with lots of colours in them. If I were to be piecing blocks in a set colour palette then I’d work with a thread colour that blends and disappears when piecing. I hope this has helped clarify things for you!
