What happens when you follow your bliss?
Last week I had the lovely pleasure of seeing my little quilt, “I Wanna Hex You Up”, win a Highly Commended in the annual Canberra Quilters Exhibition. If you follow me on Instagram you’ll probably recognise the blocks that went into making this quilt. What you may not realise is that I finished piecing over half of the blocks, quilting, binding, putting a hanging sleeve and label on it the day the quilt had to be delivered to the Exhibition.
Not such a huge feat given that no side of the quilt was allowed to exceed 35cm (just under 13″). The thing that I found amazing about this little quilt is that it’s the first time I’ve done a really good job on all parts of the quilt making process. Sure, there were points that could have been better lined up and there were opportunities to make better fussy cutting decisions, but on the whole this is such a good little mini.
I was lucky enough to win a Highly Commended in this category last year for my quilt “Fat Bottom Girls“. I really love entering the Tiny Treasures category because it’s all my own work and I get to have a little bit of fun in amongst all the “serious” sewing throughout the year.ย
Last year I used a pattern to make my quilt, but this year I used one of From Marti Michell’s Template Set H to make stars and hexagons. I kept the colour palette simple with one of my favourites; yellow, black, white and grey. I had some fun fussy cutting (because I can never resist fussy cutting) and then quilted it in very simple and straight quarter inch lines. I’m so in love with cross hatch quilting.
I tried something a little different and used double wadding.ย It’s definitely something I’ll be trying again!ย The quilt was so much fun and I really loved making it; even if I left it to the very last minute. There’s just something so liberating about having fun and following your bliss.
I hope that you get to follow a little bit of your bliss today!

It is a waste to be asking the question when you are the answer. We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us.’, and ‘If you do follow your bliss you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living.
Congratulations Angie on your ‘highly commended”! I am entering quilts in shows this year (or at least submitting them for consideration). I have finally worked up the courage. We’ll see what happens.
Oh well done you!
Yay! Congratulations!! I really like the 1/4″ cross hatch quilting you did on this mini … what was so good about the double wadding and why would you do it again? Enquiring minds (me) want to know ๐
At this risk of saying something rude… “I like it stiff and thick”. The double wadding took up some of the slack from the piecing and made it sit really well. It’s a good way to get any pillowing in your piecing to work itself out in the quilting. I was saying to Hubby that I think I’d like a quilt done in double wadding and with this tight cross hatching to curl up under – it would be so warm (and this winter has been bad!).
Oh my goodness! I just laughed out loud and my son said “what?” to which I replied “nothing!” ๐
Hi Angie, I wanted to let you know I happened to see your gorgeous mini hex quilt at the Canberra show on saturday. It was really beautiful. It was nice to see it in person as I follow your blog and IG feed . Keep up the beautiful work, my favourite quilting magazine also happens to be Love Patchwork and quilting. great to see you in it!
Kind regards, Therese
Hi Therese! Thank so much for your kind words. I’m so glad you were able to see it in person. This was the first time in 4 years I haven’t been able to go to the Exhibition (our son has been sick with a winter bug). I hope you have a great day, you’ve totally made mine! <3
Thank you so much for sharing our pattern testers post! The feedback has been awesome – and it’s an honor to be included in your roundup. Congratulations on your win at the quilt fair!
It was my pleasure Jen. It’s great to hear it’s doing so well. Thank you ๐
