Farmer’s Wife 1920’s Sew-along: Block 34 – Flock

The Farmer’s Wife 1920’s Sampler Quilt Sew-along is celebrating block 34, Flock, today. I love how effective simple half square triangles can be in creating an interesting block.

About Our Quilt

I’ve taken inspiration from one of my favourite china patterns; Spode’s Blue Italian. I treated myself when I turned 40 to some pieces from this collection with the intention that I’ll add to it over the years until I can complete the full set. I’ve never made a single colour quilt and I’m really excited to make this blue quilt. I’ve paired it with a light cream and that’s a first for me too. I normally use a bleach white with my work.

After the joy of making our Round We Go quilt, Caroline (@nightingalequilts) , Raylee (of Sunflower Stitcheries & Quilting) and I have teamed up again and we’ll be sharing the work of making this quilt. It’s a great way for the three of us to make time for each other because there’s not much you can do other than gab when you’re cutting, basting and stitching blocks. I can only begin to imagine what crazy things we’ll talk about while making this quilt.

I will post our blocks on Tuesday’s and Friday’s. The block posts will follow the same format every time: introduction (this bit), important information (all the stuff you need to know), how to assembly the block for EPP and then information about our major sponsor. Hopefully the consistency of information will help you find what you need every time.

Assembly Order

Super simple and fast. Join:

  • A1 + A2 = A – make 8
  • B1 + B2 = A – make 2
  • A + A = Unit 1 – make 4
  • Unit 1 + Unit 1 = Unit 1A – make 2
  • Unit 1A + B = Row 1
  • B + Unit 1A = Row 2
  • Join rows to make block

For those wanting a tip on how to baste the triangles so they nest easily the above diagram shows how we’re doing it.

For the very eagle eyed amongst us you’ll note that edge 3 is folded under edge 1 – you don’t have to do it like this, it’s just how Caroline likes it. I simply fold 3 over the top of 1.
