Have you got SOHMO?

SOHMO is a considered collection of quality sewing notions for makers and creators that was created by Sonya Morris in Melbourne, Australia. You may know Sonya as one half of the duo behind the Australian online fabric shop; Two Blue Birds.

Sonya very generously sent me a collection of the products from SOHMO to test drive and I am hooked! HOOKED!

How pretty does that label look?

My parcel arrived and it was like receiving a gift from a high end department store. It was so thoughtfully packaged and wrapped in copper craft paper and sealed with a SOHMO sticker. I seriously got chills. I was so thrilled about it I took a photo and sent it to Hubby and bragged about having it.

You just know that what’s underneath this pretty packaging is going to be awesome!

When I cracked the sticker seal and opened up the parcel I wasn’t disappointed. It was like all the unboxing video’s my 7yo had shared with me came into my own home! I finally got what all the unboxing excitement was about!

The attention to detail with the packaging makes this such a sublime shopping experience.

The box was filled to bursting with amazing products! Sonya had sent me:

Why yes, I did lay them all out and gaze lovingly at them.

My Experience Using SOHMO

I don’t often cut fabric with something other than a rotary cutter, but as I’ve branched out into dressmaking I’ve needed a proper set of tailoring shears to cut with. I used both the 8″ and 10″ tailoring shears on my latest batch of dresses and they were perfect! They are well balanced and don’t cause my hands to ache like others have. The sound that they make is also really awesome if you want to, as Hubby said, sound authoritative will cutting.

I’ve been using the Ricamo as thread snips and they’re great for clipping threads while I’m chain stitching as the extra length helps me not have to lean as far forward through my machine while I work. The Lecco are perfect for inclusion in my cross stitch kit. They’re beautiful and cleanly snip the threads to help stop fraying.

SOHMO scissors make the best photo accessories!

I have a ridiculously large collection of scissors, but the sign of a scissor I really love is how much I use it and the SOHMO scissors have been in constant rotation since they arrived.

I’ve also been using the glass head pins which seem like a complete luxury after sewing all this time with my cheapo pins that I got in a Spotlight gift bag. They’re sharp, they stay sharp and they handle being accidentally ironed like a champ. They also come in the most adorable tin.

As a self-confessed design nerd I have to give Sonya massive props for paying so much attention to the packaging and consumer experience. The scissors are packaged so securely in their thick boxes with cut out foam. Each pair comes with a cloth for cleaning which is such a great inclusion for helping to keep your scissors in perfect condition for longer. The pins are packed in tins which are just perfect for keeping things in if you, like me, store your pins in a dish while you’re working. I use one of the tins for storing my iPhone headphones in my bag.

I would totally recommend making the investment and adding a little SOHMO love in your life. I can’t wait to see what other products Sonya has in the pipeline, because if they’re anything like these you just know they’re going to be amazing!

The Story Behind SOHMO

Disappointed by the lacklustre selection of poorly made sewing tools available at chain stores, Sonya embarked on a journey to find quality sewing tools that are made to last. SOHMO is the result of many years of consideration and investigation to source quality, useful sewing tools. The resulting collection of sewing tools is of the highest quality and intended to be used for many years to come.

Sewing has always been a part of Sonyaโ€™s family. Her grandmother, Una, worked in Melbourne as a young woman as a seamstress for many years. Once Una had a family, she made clothes for herself, her husband and her six children.

Sonyaโ€™s mother also sewed, making many clothes for her when she was a child. She remembers hearing the slow and deliberate movement of her motherโ€™s large sewing scissors cut through layers of fabric on the sewing table. Playing in the sewing room with the jars of buttons and feeling the weight of the heavy pinking shears with black enamel handles.

Today, sewing is no longer a necessity for making ends meet, but rather a relaxing pastime. As such, we believe one should surround themselves with quality tools that make the process enjoyable. Donโ€™t underestimate the joy that can be brought by the feeling of sharp scissors cutting through layers of heavy linen, or strong smooth pins gliding through silk or cotton fabrics.
