Link Love: A Powerful Life Lesson

I’ve had a really good week. A couple of weeks ago I read this article by Ramit Sethi and it really hit a cord with me. There’s lots of information in the article, but the one thing that stuck with me was his advice to “Be unapologetic with what you need”. A couple of years ago I did something that radically changed the way I approached daily life. I looked inward, was brutally honest about what I needed to do to succeed, and then I put into place a system that helped me do that. It worked. It worked a treat. I starting kicking goals, taking names and crossing things off my to-do list in a big way. I was so excited about the results I was seeing and so I was sharing it with the people in my world and it was getting some odd reactions.
People thought is was “weird”. I was getting up at 4am, using the Miracle Morning to prime my day, and then I was working before I left for my day job. (You can read about the catalyst of this change by clicking here.) It was great for me for a number of reasons and I was moving through a massive amount of tasks in a day. As I shared my routine with people I started to get feedback that people thought I was crazy for getting up so early. I started to internalise this feedback and it slowly eroded my confidence in my routine. (Which was the really crazy thing!) This setup worked so well for me. I was exercising regularly, I was eating better, I was getting things done and I was getting great traction.
As things changed in our world I let the routine slide and I looked for a routine that was more “acceptable” to my friends and family. Nothing I tried worked the same way that this setup had worked for me. Then I read Ramit’s article and it was like I was given permission to be selfish about what I needed to do to achieve what I wanted. So this past couple of weeks I’ve been working on getting my schedule reestablished. Now, I’m no longer getting up at 4am because I’m working for myself now and not trying to share myself between too employers, but I am getting up at 5:30am (more like 5am now my body is waking itself up). I’m back to using Miracle Morning to prime my day, I’m back to regular exercising and I’m feeling so much better about the work I’m doing; I’m getting traction.
It’s been a really valuable lesson for me and I’m so grateful for it. I’ve been really honest with myself about what I need to do to have a great day and it’s been awesome. As a family we’re working much better together, as an employee I’m much more productive and as a person I’m much happier. I’m still tweaking the setup and I know that I will be for awhile to come but I have become so much more protective of it then I was originally. It’s been such a great lesson and it’s one I wanted to share with you because it’s so important in life to be true to who you are (especially if you’re trying to do something out-of-the-ordinary). Be honest with yourself about what YOU need. It’s ok to need to do something specific to achieve what you want (as long as you’re not hurting anyone of course!). It can be something as simple as needing your sewing machine set up in a certain way or maybe something a little bigger like needing to clear time each day to be creative so you can be the best version of you. Once you’ve worked out what you need to be the person you want to be you need to be protective of it and unapologetic about it.
If you’d like to know more about how I’m making it work drop me an email. Right now I’m off to do some sewing because I’ve worked out that if I sew early in the morning I’m so much more productive. Wishing you the most amazing week filled with love, laughter and fabric fondling!

It’s a shame our friends and family do that to us (mostly without any malice or realisation that they are doing it or are we letting it happen to ourselves? I don’t know … I’m no expert) I went through something similar this year. Got a lot of “advice” in the form of “that won’t work”, “how are you going to fit that in”, “but you’ve never done that before, how do you know you can do it?”, “is their money in that?”.. the list goes on. Good on you for taking back the ownership of your life and how you choose to spend it. I think I need to take a leaf out of your book!
Hi Serena! I’m pretty good at ignoring the noise, but when it comes to my family and my inner circle sometimes I give their words more weight then they deserve. I don’t know how to stop that, but I know that the older I’ve gotten and the more confident I am in my own choices the less it happens. (Really the only person that can consistently do it to me is my Dad and only this year have I found that I now have the ability to say “I hear what you’re saying, I value your opinion but I’m following my own voice on this one.” (Occasionally I’ve even dropped in a “Thanks for that, but I think you’re wrong.”)) I’ll be happy to send you the leaf! If you need anything (even if it’s just a sounding board) feel free to drop me a line. I might not respond straight away, but I will. ❤️
i wish i could say thati am going to acualize what you wrote today, and structure my day so it works for me!!! at the moment, iseem to be stuck with a host of needs of other people in my life [poeple i love and care for very much], and am looking for a balance between what i “CHOOSE” to do for them [choose being the operative word as i know i could always say no, but i’m choosing to put them first], and my own personal needs. yse i know that if i don’t take care of me, i won’t be able to take care of anyone else, but thebalance is so illusive!
Hi Shoshana! As a parent that’s a balance that I am constantly looking for and I feel like at the moment I’ve finally worked out the minimum that I need to be able to function and be the best version of the (imperfect) parent that I can be. The key is to find out what it is that you need to be able to function, because you’re right you do need to take care of you – but that might just mean that you get 30 minutes a day to watch tv/read/sew/create/something. Or it might mean that you get a 5 minute uninterrupted shower. It doesn’t have to be something HUGE – you just need to find out what you need and make sure that you get it everyday (as best you can) so that you can help those that you love and care for. If my world fell apart and I wanted to keep functioning my minimum would be the 5 minute journal and a 3 minute uninterrupted shower each day. 8 minutes out of 24 hours – it’s simple to do. Make sure you’re looking after yourself. <3
oh is that path of thinking familiar!!! i’m also a parent,[happy to be the mother of 8, and the grandmother of 30 some odd!]. where my confusion comes in is that every time i think i’ve finally gotten it down, or my needs fluctuate, or someone elses needs conflict with someone elses, or or or…….i’m beginning to come to the conslusion[hows that for not being sure!], that the balance, as well as the state of mind that attaining that balance brings, [serenity, peace, joy…..], is something enternal, somehow connected to actively choosing all the things i do anyway, ………..a thought in process, a life in process, and of course to come full circle, without tending to ones own basic needs, whatever they may be a the moment, the whole thing go kaput! it’s a gift along the way to share with each other, thats for sure.
shoshana
