MEET JUDY NEWMAN

What are you most proud of from your quilting experience?

I have been very honoured to be asked to submit my quilt designs to various Australian quilting magazines over the years. More recently, the French magazine, Quiltmania have asked to see my quilts and are publishing an article in their next issue due out this month. (You can find issue 103 which features Judy here.)

Whatโ€™s the one piece of advice about quilting that all new quilters should know?

If I were to give advice to a new quilter it would be to keep calm, prepare to have fun and donโ€™t worry about the odd wonky seam. It is a learning process, there is a lot to know and ultimately, its all achievable. But it takes time to perfect and gather the information and also to discover where your talents lie, whether it be applique, hand quilting or piecing or machine piecing. Try all aspects and play with the fabric, it will become clear where you are going with your quilting as you learn.

Whoโ€™s the quilter(s) that inspire you at the moment?

I would have to say Margaret Sampson George, the Australian designer. She is a wonderful person, warm and kind and she teaches with such grace and freedom, if that makes sense. Her fearlessness with colour and design is well known and her quilts are a joy to behold.
