MEET JUDY NEWMAN

What quilting challenges would you like to conquer in the next 12 months.

I think I would like to go to America and explore the quilting world where many of our quilting traditions come from. I would like to go to Quiltmarket in Houston or elsewhere and visit shops around the country, that would be a challenge and a treat at the same time.

What are your three favourite quilts that reflect who you are as a quilter?

I have made many quilts, some I like, some I don’t and some I love even years after they were made.

The first one would be Museum Medallion which I made after seeing the original version of this quilt made in the 1800’s, in a Museum Book.

The second would be Summer House. It is made in reds, blues and white, with a central “Summer House” block in the middle. Simple and traditional blocks and colours, but very me.

The last and most favourite is Emma Mary, named after my daughter. It was a joy to make and I am in the process of hand quilting it. My daughter has gone to live in London for a year and it makes me happy to sit and quilt it to give to her when she returns.

If you weren’t a quilter what other creative endeavor would you like to master?

I would have to say interior design or house styling. I have always loved playing with decorating and that would definitely by my choice.
