#ScrappyTripalong2019
#ScrappyTripalong2019 is a go! When I put out the call to see if anyone would be interested in sewing along with me and making their own versions of this quilt I never expected the response that I got. Needless to say, you guys seem to want to make one of these quilts as much as I do. So here we are.
This will be a very informal sew-along. It’s basically an accountability system, not a prize winning endeavour. I’m not organising any sponsorship or prizes for this, we’re going old school and we’re sewing for the fun and community of it.
Pattern + Tutorial
I’m not going to reinvent the wheel when it comes to showing you how to make the quilt blocks. Bonnie Hunter has done an amazing job of writing a great tutorial sharing a super simple and quick way to make the quilt blocks and so that’s what we’ll be using.
Click here to read the tutorial.
I also won’t be posting weekly tutorials for this one. It’s super simple, super beginner friendly, so you won’t need hand holding from me. However, if you get stuck and need some advice, help, tips, etc. just drop me an email, direct message or comment on social media and I’ll do what I can to help you out.
Colouring Sheet
If you’re looking for a colouring sheet to help you plan out your fabrics and repeat before you get sewing then be sure to check out the free colouring sheet offered by Meg at Tea & Brie.
Click here to access the colouring sheet.
Fabric Requirements
Bonnie’s tutorial doesn’t provide for fabric requirements, but the internet is a wonderful thing and there’s a lot of information out there about how much fabric you’ll need to make various sized Scrappy Trip Around the World Quilts.
My favourite resource is from Sherri at A Quilting Life. She’s taken the time to pull together a chart on how many strips you’ll need to make quilts of various sizes.
You can download it by clicking here.
Alternatively I found this image that’s credited to Whipstitchfabrics.com (although the site seems to no longer be working) which has a different combination of math and block sizes.
Sew-along Dates
This is going to be a quickie sew-along because I want to punch out a quilt top in a month and these blocks are super speedy to put together. For those of you (like me) that need dates for your calendars here they are:
- January 21 – 27: Fabric Selection
- January 28 – February 3: Cut Strips
- February 4 – March 3: Make Blocks
- March 4 – 10: Assemble Quilt Top
- March 11 – Make backing, binding and send to long-armer *wink*

Thank you Angie! I’ve had this on my list for ages and thanks to you I’ll finally get it done. And fast! Love the tutorial from Bonnie Hunter.
Thanks so much you sweetie! looking forward to this……Hugs and thanks from me in New Zealand!
I’ve been wanting to do another scrappy trip quilt and even added it to my guild goal list for this year so your QAL will give me just the push I need. My previous scrappy trip was done as a checkerboard and I loved the final quilt. You can see it here if you’re interested in another take on the concept. http://www.springleafstudios.com/search/label/Scrappy%20Trip%20Around%20the%20World
Thank you for sharing your quilt! I love scrappy, but I’m afraid I can’t look very long at a terribly scrappy quilt! My eyes go wild trying to find a spot to land. I love your quilt idea! However mine turns out, I’m so excited to try this out!
