Wistful Winds Pinwheel Baby Quilt

Wistful Winds by Shari Butler for Riley Blake Designs. 3D Pinwheel Patchwork Quilt made by Angie Wilson of www.GnomeAngel.com. Quilted by Raylee Bielenberg of Sunflower Quilting. Full details on www.gnomeangel.com

It’s with great pleasure that I’m sharing the baby quilt I designed and made as part of the celebrations for Shari Butler (of Doohickey Designs) new fabric line for Riley Blake; Wistful Winds. There’s such a beautiful story behind the creation of this fabric and I’m so honoured that Shari asked me to be a part of celebrating it’s release. The minute I saw those little girls being blown in the wind I knew that I had to make a pinwheel quilt. (And I haven’t been alone, check out some of the other amazing creations my fellow bloggers have made!)

I was originally planning an all white quilt with pinwheels patchwork with the Wistful Winds fabric, but when I had it in my hands I knew that I had to let the fabric be the star and the pinwheels play second fiddle to its vibrancy and colour. I had planned to traditionally patchwork the pinwheels, but I saw Kristy (@schnitzelandboo) making 3D pinwheels and I just knew what I had to do and an idea was born.

This quilt is pre-cut friendly with the whole thing being able to be made from charm packs. I love it’s simplicity with the added dimension of the pinwheels. It’s 50″ x 70″ and is the perfect size for the new baby in your life (or as a gift for someone’s else’s baby). I’m so smitten with it that I’m going to be releasing the pattern very shortly. I used the Wistful Stripe (which is made for binding) to bind it and spliced in a little bit of the Wistful Wing in Orange to give it some interest. I used the Riley Blake Confetti Cotton in White for the pinwheels and I must confess it is lush. Like, seriously lush. I’m a Kona girl most of the time, but the feel of this cotton solid is enough to have me thinking again. It’s so buttery and smooth and it’s just perfect for a baby quilt.

Raylee (of Sunflower Quilting) did a custom quilt job on this quilt and I wish I had photos that really show it off. Raylee replicated the dandelion image in the quilting and quilted wind and movement around them. It really adds to the playfulness of the quilt. It’s quilted in Aurifil #2110 50wt (click here to purchase) and it just melts into the fabric.

I’m really in love with this quilt and I can’t wait to share the pattern with you all so you can make your own versions. It goes together really quickly and it’s a fun way to use fabrics you love in a quirky way. Thank you so much to Shari for letting me celebrate her new fabric line with you all. It’s a truly beautiful line and it brings me joy to be able to share it with you all.
