Farmer’s Wife 1920’s Sew-along: Block 4 – Basket Weave

The Farmer’s Wife 1920’s Sampler Quilt Sew-along is celebrating block 4, Basket Weave, today. It’s a really simple block and it can be quite striking in some people’s hands. Mine are not those hands! We’ve gone for a simple block focusing on the “twirl” in the centre.
I’ve taken inspiration from one of my favourite china patterns; Spode’s Blue Italian. I treated myself when I turned 40 to some pieces from this collection with the intention that I’ll add to it over the years until I can complete the full set. I’ve never made a single colour quilt and I’m really excited to make this blue quilt. I’ve paired it with a light cream and that’s a first for me too. I normally use a bleach white with my work.
After the joy of making our Round We Go quilt, Caroline (@nightingalequilts) , Raylee (of Sunflower Stitcheries & Quilting) and I have teamed up again and we’ll be sharing the work of making this quilt. It’s a great way for the three of us to make time for each other because there’s not much you can do other than gab when you’re cutting, basting and stitching blocks. I can only begin to imagine what crazy things we’ll talk about while making this quilt.
I will post our blocks on Tuesday’s and Friday’s. The block posts will follow the same format every time: introduction (this bit), important information (all the stuff you need to know), how to assembly the block for EPP and then information about our major sponsor. Hopefully the consistency of information will help you find what you need every time.

Assembly Order

This is a pretty simple block (it’s really simple compared to some of the blocks coming up!). If you’ve checked out these tutorials on how to EPP you should be ready to go. I’ve labelled the pieces in the order that I’ve attached mine to help you think about how you’ll assemble them.
You need to make the rectangles into squares, so join A1 + A2 + A3 and then join them to make two row of two squares. Make sense? If you’re having issues keeping things lined up I highly recommend clover wonder clips (or as a cheap alternative a paper clip!).

I’m new. How can I get blocks 1, 2, and 3? Where do I register? I got an email, but am I supposed to also have an account?
Hi Sally, the blog post you’ve commented on has all the links to where you can find relevant information and the answers to the questions you’ve asked.
We were in Paducah a couple weeks ago and tried to visit paper pieces. Alas, they are only open by appointment only so to avoid disappointment, call first.
