If you haven’t noticed by now I’m quite partial to a sew-along. I love them for a number of reasons but the two biggest are simple: 1. They hold me accountable which means I finish things and B. I get to make the things I want with a whole bunch of rad people on the internet. 2017 has been a bumper year of sew-alongs and I’ve had a blast making quilts, meeting new people and seeing quilters come alive through exercising their creative muscles. With 2018 rapidly approaching (seriously, is the world spinning faster these days?) I’ve turned my filled to the brim mind towards what awesome things we can make together in 2018 and I wanted to give you all a bit of an insight into what’s coming. (The list is growing and I can guarantee that after Quilt Market next week it’s going to be longer!)
Fussy Cutters Club Block of the Month
Kicking off in January 2018 I’m going to be hosting a block of the month event based on a quilt that I’ve designed as a great introduction to those that haven’t had much experience with fussy cutting, those that are looking to flex their fussy cutting muscles or those that simply want to make a traditional inspired quilt. This event is going to be held in a new format with exclusive prizes and opportunities just for those participating. It’s going to be a backstage pass to all things GnomeAngel and Fussy Cutters Club.
I’m also teaming up with two of my favourite stores, Amitie Textiles (Australia) and Pink Door Fabrics (USA), to bring you the Fussy Cutters Fabric Club. It’s a fabric club designed specifically to help you build a fussy cutting friendly stash and show you how to make the most of the fabrics you buy and fussy cut with. The two stores will sell two completely different bundles, both curated by me, and as we work through the Block of the Month Quilt I’ll show you how you can use these bundles within the quilt to really deliver some impact through your piecing.
Quilt Pattern: Yet-to-be-released. Quilt will consist of 48 9″ blocks (finished size) set in a traditional block setting and with a border. Inspired by traditional blocks that will help you improve your accuracy, fussy cutting and understanding of how to get a balance in your work when fussy cutting. Pattern to be released 1 December 2017.
Event Timeline: 1 January 2018 – 31 December 2018
All the Animals – Elizabeth Hartman Event
I’ve been dropping hints about this one for awhile now to those of you on my mailing list and I’m thrilled to be able to give you a little more information about what’s coming. This event is going to be an event with a difference: it will be a choose your own adventure event. Elizabeth Hartman is the Queen of patchwork (not Foundation Paper Pieced) animal blocks. I’ve long been adding her quilts to my must-make list and in 2018 I’m going to make them. She’s got so many of them that I’ve decided to provide you all with an accountability framework in the form of a sewalong but you pick what you want to sew. You could make one block, one quilt, 4 quilts, 2 quilts and a cushion – whatever you like. You just have to pick from the patterns I’ll be working from. You do not have to sew them all, you can sew as many as you want. This event is about providing you with a sewing buddy while you work, and of course the chance to win some great prizes.
Don’t worry if it all sounds a little bit confusing right now, I’m going to give you more information in November and answer all your questions, explain it in more depth and give you all the information you need to have a great time making some (or one) amazing quilt.
Quilt Pattern: 11 Animal Patterns by Elizabeth Hartman (you do not need to buy them all). Details will be announced in November 2017.
Event Timeline: 3 January 2018 – 9 June 2018
Farmer’s Wife 1930’s Sampler Quilt
The event that started them all. Back in 2015 I partnered with Fat Quarter Shop and Marti Michell to host the Farmer’s Wife 1930’s Quilt Sew-along. It was a massive event that taught me so much about what goes in to running a good event, what I needed to do to run a good event and how to structure things to help as many people as possible finish this ambitious quilt. I won’t be making this quilt during the event (I will be finishing the two I’ve got though!) and I’ll be running it a little differently. It will be run completely within the Farmer’s Wife 1930’s Sampler Quilt Sew-along Facebook Group (click here to join). There will be no posting to Instagram required, although you can if you wish, which I know is something a lot of you have been asking for.
The event will be run as a framework for motivating and keeping people accountable. We’ll be working through the blocks in numerical order and setting a pace of two blocks a week so that the quilt can be finished within a year. The quilt can be machine pieced (and I’ll be sharing the tutorials by Marti Michell so you can see how her templates help with easy piecing and accuracy) and it can be done with foundation paper piecing. I’m not going to lie, this quilt is challenging. However, the community on Facebook within the event group (there’s over 8,000 members) is fabulous and you’ll always be able to find answers to questions and assistance as you need it.
I’ll be partnering with sponsors to offer kits, prizes and discounts throughout the event to help keep the momentum going and to take some of the fear out of making this quilt.

Event Timeline: 1 January 2018 – 31 December 2018
This is the last year that I’ll be using Tula Pink’s City Sampler as the pattern for this yearly event. (In 2019 #100Days100Blocks will be using an exciting new 100 block sampler that I think you’re all going to go bonkers for.) So, if you’ve been sitting on the fence about making this quilt this is the year to do it. Because it’s the last year we’ll be using Tula’s book I’ve decided that 2018 is the year I make my all Tula version. I’ve also decided that it’s the year that we celebrate all things Tula so the prizes are going to be massive.
As with the past two events it will be run completely on Instagram. It’s an endurance test and I adore it. There’s something so amazing about seeing all the same block patterns made through different people’s fabric choices. I’m also running things a little bit differently in 2018, just like a marathon you can register to get a participant number. This unique number will unlock exclusive discounts, extra prizes and get you access to content just for you. It’s going to be a VIP pass to all things #100Days100Blocks.
Book: You can buy the book via these links Book Depository (click here) | Amazon (click here) | Fons & Porter (click here) | Keepsake Quilting (click here) | Interweave Store (click here) and if you do so I will make a small commission on the sale which will go towards helping me to run this amazing event. (Thank you so much!)
Event Timeline: 30 March 2018 – 7 July 2018
