THE 7 DEADLY QUILTY SINS
Did you ever see the movie Se7en? The movie is centered on two detectives, a rookie and a veteran, who hunt a serial killer that uses the seven deadly sins as his modus operandi. The movie came out in 1995 and my Mother and I not really knowing much about the movie decided we’d take my Nana to see it. In hindsight, totally not a movie to take your Nana to!
But I digress,ย aย few days ago a friend and I were talking about our love of quilting and it got me thinking about the 7 Deadly Sins and how they could relate to quilting.
As I’m oft to do, my mind got to wondering; do I need to confess to my quilty sins?
Turns out… I may need to go to quilters confession…
Am I guilty of Quilty Lust?
Yes! In fact I’m having a bout of it right now… did you see Tula Pink has a True Colours line coming out in May?
It seems like I’m never free of lusty quilty thoughts thanks to Instagram, Pinterest and fabric manufacturers. If I’m not lusting after a new line of fabric, I’m lusting after some fabulous quilt created by some amazing quilter that’s sharing their work on Instagram or I’m going ga-ga over someone’s amazing quilt on Pinterest.
Who needs quilty viagra when there’s just so much quilt eye candy out there in the world!
Am I guilty ofย Quilty Gluttony?
Ahh… Hell Yes! Have you seen the size of my stash? (That’s what he said!)
When it comes to fabric I haven’t met a yard I didn’t like. In fact, I’m a bit of a fabric tart as I tend to bring them home with me on our first meeting. It’s gotten to the point where I now actively avoid posting photos of my stash anywhere because I’m embarrassed by it. It’s just ridiculous and I’m convinced I still need more because I can never find the right fabric for the project I’m working on, and then if I make it into a fabric store I can’t find a fabric I don’t want to purchase.
It’s like feast and famine… both of which I’m positive are a quilty plague.
Am Iย guilty ofย Quiltyย Greed?
Pains me to say… yes.
This one usually flares it’s ugly head whenever there’s a sale or a destash happening. You know that feeling that you simply must have something lest someone else adds it to their stash and you never get the chance to fondle it. Yeah, me neither. *nervous look*
Or what about the uncontrollable desire to make all the quilts. We have enough quilts in our house to keep us warm for a hundred winters, but I just can’t seem to stop making them and then I can never part with them because I love them so much.

Am Iย guilty ofย Quiltyย Sloth?
Yes! Yes! Yes!
There’s a pile of UFO’s (unfinished objects) that would attest to my slothfulness when it comes to certain quilty tasks. There’s also a large number of quilts that would demonstrate the lengths that I’ll go to to not have to baste and quilt anything larger than a mini.
As prolific as some people think I am I’m actually really rather lazy (my Sea Breeze Mini has been sitting, quilted, in a pile for the last 6 months because I’m too lazy to pick out a binding fabric). ย I’m convinced if I didn’t enforce deadlines on myself I’d never get anything done.
Am Iย guilty ofย Quiltyย Wrath?
You’ll have to ask the neighbours. I’m sure there’s been times when they thought they were living next door to a Sailor’s Saloon. I have, on rare occasions, been guilty of yelling some obscenity (“Your mother smells of Elderberries!”) at my sewing machine or current sewing project.
There’s the “drawer of shame” that hides all the projects that I’ve shoved in there after having a particularly violent bout of quilty wrath with as I can no longer bring myself to look at them.
Am Iย guilty ofย Quiltyย Envy?
Everyday. Have you seen the amazing work that other people are doing? Why, I’ve got a lovingly curated Pinterest board just bursting at the seams with all the work I envy, made by the people I envy, with their talents that I envy.
I even envy sewing spaces, sewing retreats, sewing stashes, sewing celebrities, sewing business… you name it, I probably envy it. Quilty envy seems to be close bedfellows with quilty lust in my world.
Am Iย guilty ofย Quiltyย Pride?
*bashful look* Um… have you seen my Sew & Tell page? Of course I am – there’s some days where I just love myself sick over something I’ve made and I want to shout it from the rooftops and show the whole world and just go “look at me, look at me, I’m bloody brilliant I am.”.
The funny thing about quilty pride, the minute I start having a dose of it Old Mr Murphy and his Law roll in to town and teach me a lesson or two about the merits of being humble (it usually involves the quick unpick (which isn’t so quick so I don’t know why they gave it that name…)).
So, it looks like I might need to cart myself off to quilters confession… lucky for me, there’s a meeting of our local chapter coming up in February. If you’d like to confess your quilty sins I’d love to hear them, commiserate with you and then work out new ways for us to quilty sin together, just leave me a comment or get in contact.

Oh my you forgot sewing machine slut….every time a go into a sewing machine dealer, for what ever reason, I just want to touch them all over and rub myself on them. It does not matter how many machines I have at home, faithfully waiting for me to love them up….oh look Bernina…..ooooh shiny….
Yup! But you are not alone for sure. Everything resonates well with me. Guilty.guilty guilty!
Great posts Angie!
So many giggles! And way to much truth
This is a hilarious (and humbling) post! Ugh, I think we are all guilty of the 7 Deadly Quilty Sins! I might have to make a charity quilt or two to signify repentance. Great post!
I’m guilty of all those “sins”, especially the amount of fabric that I have. LOL What a great topic!!!
my lust starts at Instagram and my limited creative time. Darn daytime job that saps my creativity!!! Envy starts in the same place…I envy those that can stay home and create all day. I know that has its challenges, but I would love to be able to do that some day and not be freaked out about finances.
All of the above. Must not buy more fabric. Oh look, more fabric! Curse you Cotton & Steel.
I don’t have a drawer of shame, but my Swoon has been sitting in the naughty corner for a very long time!
I think you’re a completely normal quilter.
At times I have been touched by all the 7 deadly quilting sins – the ones that linger are sloth (all those UFOs) and pride (when something REALLY works). I suffer the consequences of previous greed and gluttony in the fabric acquisition stakes and am now looking to de-stash a little. Perhaps a symbiotic relationship will develop with other sinners…
sigh, guilty
When AP&Q ran their competition for ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ I designed a quilt titled ‘Seven Stitch Bitches’. I still have not started it. ๐
You sound completely normal to me!
Yes, I want all the fabric too. All of it. Can’t get enough of it, like a junkie.
Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries ๐
I think you’re pretty normal and the same as the rest of us, slightly worrying though when you realise that your faourite hobby has made you a massive sinner lol
Feels so good to know I am not alone in my sins. This blog just made me feel so much better and less guilty about my obsession, stash and need to make everything I see!
Well, that’s certainly a unique take on quilting. I am probably ‘guilty’ of most of those, envy most certainly. Awesome post ๐
Yep, all sounds about right to me too!
Great post, perfect read with a coffee and a giggle ๐
Kwikty Guilty…great post.
What an awesome post! You can be guilty of bloggy pride for writing such a great and entertaining blog post! ๐ I laughed out loud at “your mother smells of Elderberries!” Yeah, that’s what I scream at my machine too. *wink wink* I think I am guilty of all these sins too. Especially the pride one. My husband has nearly had his eyes fall out of his head he’s rolled them so hard at me and my quilty pride. ๐
ha! love it! I am feeling particularly bad over the first few at the moment as I am supposed to be saving money this year… but there are so many divine lines coming out!! sigh…
Lovely to know you’re human as well.
Guilty, quilty sinner here as well.
*snickers*
Well, I don’t know that I actually repent me of any of these sins…
Brilliant post Angie…and so funny…and yes maybe I can relate to all of those quilty sins!
I don’t quilt (is that a verb?) and I found this hilarious Angie ๐
Se7en is one of my favorite movies!! (Hope that doesn’t scare too many quilters away) And this is a great post about the quilty sins!! This has inspired me to see my sewing space from a new perspective! Thanks for the dose of reality and helping me see what I need to do and CAN do!! ๐
Maybe it’s time to form a Quilter’s Anonymous group? Nah. Just kidding.
Am I Guilty? Yes! But I’m not sorry one little bit! Great post!
I plead the 5th
I am guilty as charged! Maybe not so much wrath, definitely envy, greed and sloth and the others. Its not a bad thing is it?
Thanks for the laugh! I’m guilty of all these quilty sins, too!
