Link Love: I’m a Big Chicken

I’ve been under the weather again this week. My run of good luck thanks to the hormone suppression treatment I’ve been having pre-surgery has come to an end it seems. It’s not been as bad as it was pre-injection but it’s also not been much fun. Lucky for me I’ve gotten confirmation of my surgery date and it looks like my uterus and I are set to part company the first week in October. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t packing my pants. I’m a worrier at the best of times, but looming surgery has got me all out of shape. I’m trying to be upbeat and positive about it all, but I’ll be quite frank it’s scaring me to pieces. I just keep looking at my work-in-progress pile and thinking “I can’t leave now, I need to finish all this stuff!”. *wink*

Ever since we had our son I’ve become super anxious and paranoid about something happening to me. I’m sure it’s a natural part of parenting and I’ve got no logical reason to fear the boogeyman but I do. I look at him and how fast he’s growing up and I don’t want to miss any of that. I want to see all the milestones, get all the hugs and be the one he shares his thoughts with. Lately I look at him and he looks like a teenager to me, he seems to have shot up overnight and he’s talking more about the way he sees the world and what he thinks. There’s no infant left in him.

I found myself looking at him the other day while he played and thinking, “He survived infancy. We did it.” Which is crazy, but it’s the first time I’ve felt like I could breath out since he was born. I was so worried that we’d break him or that something would happen. But here he is, 6 and going strong. I look at him and wonder all the time if I’m doing the right thing, if I’m teaching him the things he’ll need to have a fulfilled and contented life. I wonder what things he’ll blame me for and what he’ll wish I did differently. I wonder what he’ll succeed at and what he’ll struggle with and whether he’ll share any of those traits with me.

I see so much good and light in him. He’s got a beautiful soul and I hope he keeps that all of his life. He’s kind, funny, loving and happy. All the things that I wish I could be. He’s taught me so much and I’m so very lucky to be able to call myself his Mother. And now I’ve gone and gotten all sentimental and teary. Right, time to stop thinking about those things we cannot control and get on with doing the things we can.ย Wishing you a week filled with love, laughter and much fabric fondling!

  1. The prayers and love from all of your adoring quilty friends will be like a giant hug or enormous quilt keeping you safe. Besides which you will feel so so much better after.

  2. I was scared before my surgery too. I think every mother is… I have teenage daughters, so I definitely worried about them. It’s normal to feel this way. You are strong and brave, and your surgery is going to go well, and you are going to heal quickly. It’s going to be okay ???
