Starry Technicolour Chaos: Block Construction

Starry Technicolour Chaos is my pattern for Month 5 of the 9 Patch Parade. This week we’re going to learn all about the basic block construction that makes up this fabulously fun quilt. This pattern uses either Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) or the From Marti Michell Perfect Patchwork Template Sets. I will be showing you how to make the block using the From Marti Michell Perfect Patchwork Template Sets.

Measurements for the pieces needed to construct this block will not be provided in this tutorial. It is a prerequisite of making this block that you have a copy of the pattern, Starry Technicolour Chaos [CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE]. Measurements can be found in this pattern.

How to Make the Block

general advice:

  • Tolerance Levels: you need to decide what is an acceptable tolerance level for “mistakes”. For example if your blocks are consistently 6¼” instead of 6.5″ are you ok with this. Or if your seams matching are less than an eight of an inch “off” are you ok with this. There’s no hard or fast rule and it’s different for everyone, so remember it’s your quilt so make your decision for you.
  • Press your seams at each step. Click here for a great article on how to press your seams for patchwork.
  • You can iron and starch your fabric prior to cutting. I also starch when pressing bulky seams.
  • When pinning, pin away from you so that you don’t move your pieces when pinning.
  • Where possible I chain piece all the pieces I can in one step. If you’re unsure of what chain piecing is, click here for a tutorial on how to do it.

The photos below show you the step progression of making this block. Please read the accompanying text before starting to make your block.

Block Assembly Steps

1: Square in Triangle Unit

Use the From Marti Michell Perfect Patchwork Templates and/or Rulers to cut pieces E and D. [Please see tutorial picture “Step One” for the pieces laid out.]

Refer to your copy of the pattern for which templates to use for each piece.

  1. Attach Piece E to Piece D as per Step Two and Step Three. Press.
  2. Attach Piece E to Piece E + D as per Step Four and Step Five. Press.
  3. Repeat to make 4. [Please see tutorial picture “Step Six” for the units.]

2: Flying Geese Unit

Use the From Marti Michell Perfect Patchwork Templates and/or Rulers to cut pieces C and B. [Please see tutorial picture “Step Seven” for the pieces laid out.]

Refer to your copy of the pattern for which templates to use for each piece.

  1. Attach Piece C to Piece B as per Step Eight and Step Nine. Press.
  2. Attach Piece C to Piece C + B as per Step Ten and Step Eleven. Press.
  3. Repeat to make 4. [Please see tutorial picture “Step Twelve” for the units.]

3: Adding Square in a Triangle to Flying Geese

This step requires 1 – Flying Geese and 1 – Square in a Triangle.

Step Fourteen shows how to use a pin to make sure that the point in the flying geese unit matches to the point in the triangle in a square unit.

Use the pin to line up the point of the flying geese unit with the point in the square in a triangle unit.

Once aligned, pin the outside edges and put a pin in the middle to hold the points together.

Remove the pin used to align the points. Join together. Press.

Repeat to make 4.

4: Make the 9 Patch Unit

Use the From Marti Michell Perfect Patchwork Templates and/or Rulers to cut pieces F. [Please see tutorial picture “Step Twenty” for the pieces laid out.]

Refer to your copy of the pattern for which templates to use for each piece.

  1. Join 3 – Piece F together to make a row. Press. Repeat to make 3 Rows.
  2. Join Row 1 to Row 2. Press.
  3. Press 1 + 2 to Row 3. Press.
  4. Repeat to make 4.

5: Complete the Block

The block requires:

  • 4 – Triangle in a Square + Flying Geese Units
  • 1 – Piece A
  • 4 – 9 Patch Units
  1. Join units to make rows. Press.
  2. Join Rows to complete blocks. Press.
  3. Repeat to make the required number of block for your chosen quilt size.
