IVF UPDATE: THE RESULTS ARE IN

Well, it’s the day of reckoning and we’ve had our pregnancy blood test.ย The results came through at 2pm today.ย We’re not pregnant.
It’s disappointing, but we had an inclining earlier in the week as I had the first blood test to check for the pregnancy hormone on Monday and it came back negative as well.ย I’ve had a few days to process the news so I’m not as shell shocked as I was on Monday night.
The only thing I can think of to describe it at the moment is disappointing.ย We’d gone into this cycle thinking that it wouldn’t work because it was the first cycle and there would be things that needed to be done to see how I would react.ย (Like the medication and the fertilization.)ย But when the fertilization went so well I think we got a little carried away with the possibilities.
In some ways I’ve felt guilty because on one hand I’m kind of relieved that it didn’t work.ย I know that’s just fear of the unknown and the “what if I’m a bad parent” thoughts playing out.ย But I can’t help but think about relishing our together time a little more now that it hasn’t worked.
We talked together at length on Monday night about what we’re going to do now that it hasn’t worked.ย At heart I’m a quitter.ย The minute anything looks hard I’m out of there.ย ย I only ever stick with things that are easy for me to do well at.ย It’s a horrible trait, but I acknowledge it’s existence.ย So it’s really pushing all of my buttons that I can’t quit at this.

Actually, I probably would have quit by now if it wasn’t for HUBBY.ย ย With the cyst, the D&C and the gastric sleeve all happening last year I would have quit a long time ago.ย In fact after our first assisted cycle I did quit… for about a year.ย I cried “too hard” and so we stopped.ย But not this time.ย ย This time I’m going to suck it up and push through until we get our result or we use up all of our embryos trying.ย Once that happens we’ll re-evaluate where we’re at.
I’m concerned that if we do stop between cycles I’ll delay us going back again.ย I’m a procrastinator when it’s not something I want to do and HUBBY (bless him) allows me to do procrastinate when he doesn’t want to argue.ย So really, I need to push through this.
There’s two things I won’t be doing on the next cycles.ย The first is acupuncture.ย It’s a waste of time and money for me.ย I know that other people swear by it, but for me it did nothing.ย I never left there feeling relaxed, in fact often I left there feeling like I’d wasted an hour of my time and $85 of our hard earned money.ย The acupuncturists I saw were brilliant though, and for their bedside manner I would highly recommend them.ย But for me, I’d rather blow the time and money on a relaxation massage.
The other thing I won’t be doing is buying any home pregnancy tests.ย I started taking them on Saturday night and it did nothing to help my mood.ย I rationalized it by saying that seeing the negative on the test would help me adjust to hearing the news, but all it really did was steal some of the time I could have spent enjoying the possibility.ย Although, on some level I think it did help me prepare for the negative I also think it was like peeking at your Christmas presents early.ย The next cycle I’m going to wait and have the nurses break it to me.
At times during this process I’ve questioned the wisdom of sharing with people at work, friends and the internet about our journey, but I think (on the whole) it’s been really helpful.ย I felt for people that we knew through the internet on Monday and today because it’s so hard to know what to say to someone.ย But, that aside, it’s been good to have a community of sorts around us.ย We don’t have anyone in our immediate circle that’s been through this so it’s great to be able to tap into the support and wisdom that’s out there in the big wired world.
Right now I’m waiting on hearing back from my Fertility Specialist about how soon we can start our next cycle.ย I’m hoping that he’s not the kind of doctor that recommends a break in between cycles, and if he is I’m going to argue that we don’t need a break.ย Either way we’ll know in the next couple of days what’s going to happen.ย I’m really excited about it and feel like I’m in a good frame of mind for it.ย I know that it will happen for us, that we will get a family of our own, this is just the journey we need to go on to get it.

Hi Colette,
Thank you for sharing your journey. I understand how difficult it can be when you’re pulled in a hundred different directions with the advice, etc.
I no longer have the option of falling pregnant naturally due to damage that was done to my tubes by a rather large ovarian cyst that I had removed a few years ago.
How long you should wait is really something that you and your doctors need to decide. Each case is different, and I know that the way in which they do the procedure in the US is different to how they do it here in Australia. I know it’s frustrating and it can be hard to know what decisions to make, but you really just have to let your head make the decisions.
I’m sorry I can’t be of more assistance. I wish you all the luck and good fortune in the world. I hope you get to realize your dream soon!

Sorry kiddo about the failed IVF. Money and Hopes gone. Now, they say the IVF itself is a test to decide what to do in the future (some test). When I got acupunture and herbs it wasn’t to relax me, but to change Chi and all that stuff, basically to make my body more ready to take a test. Mine didn’t work either, but I will say my cycles got almost normal after just a few months and that I credit the herbs (this lady was herbs first, needles later). I did get pregnant on my own a few months after losing weight and the IVF, but MC. I hadn’t gotten PG before, so it was sort of an improvement. She also had me wait between treatments to get over the *heat* and changes it brings. I think it is a good idea, let your body recover and you might get PG naturally, at least it (sort of) worked for me. My age is the biggest issue. I didn’t know the age thing until it was too late, I wish I’d gotten a IVF the first time I went to a RE, better chance then and I went thru it in the end anyway..
I do have a question for you. I am 40 1/2. BMI 40, considering the sleeve. I am about to lose my insurance that covers it. I want to try again IVF, thinking IVF with my eggs and then when/if it fails donor eggs, then give up. Age and $$ is a major factor.
But, if I get the sleeve how long should I really wait, if I wait a year, then my window for my own eggs is lost (and it already is mostly shot), I don’t care about the weight loss, it is the health factor. I’ve read so much. I thought maybe 6-8 months and make sure I am out of Ketosis too. IDK. I thought maybe you’ve read in your blogging journies and have some advice. You can email me at renniemommie @yahoo.com Thanks!
Told you I’d pop my head in. ๐
Good luck for the next cycle. K and I will definitely have our fingers (and eyes and toes) firmly crossed for you. ๐
Your attitude is beyond commendable. I’m so sorry to hear this cycle didn’t work and I’m praying your next cycle is a perfect success!! (are you doing FET, or IVF?)
I’m so sorry to hear you weren’t successful this time. But you sound like you have a great, and positive attitude, so good luck with next time!!
