MEET WOODENSPOON QUILTS

I can’t believe it’s the end of 2014 and this will be the last “Meet Me”ย I feature for the year, but I’ve saved one of the best for last; Rachel of Woodenspoon Quilts. I found Rachel on Instagram and it took me an embarrassingly long time to realise she also had a blog.
I am in servere jealous lust over Rachel’s ability to mix low volume prints with bold, bright, vibrant modern prints and create the most sublime of quilts and quilted items. I have loved getting to know a little more about her quilting journey and the big things she has planned for 2015.
1. How did you come to be a quilter?
Back in 1999, Mum said she’d like to make me a quilt, all I had to do was choose some fabric. That sounded easy enough, but first of all I had to figure out where to buy fabric, thank goodness for phone books! Walking into my LQS was completely overwhelming, there were so many fabrics, I had no idea where to start. They asked if Iโd like to buy fat quarters, fat what?!. Somehow I ended up with a modest pile of fabric. Mum showed me how to cut the fat quarters into 6″ squares with a rotary cutter and ruler. That part was kind of fun, it definitely appealed to my love of precision. But the whole process looked like an awful lot of work!
Fast forward nearly 10 years, Mum had just bought a book full of beautiful quilts, they were so bright and colourful. The book was Material Obsession and I was in awe. I immediately went out and bought myself a copy. I didn’t really plan on making a quilt, just on admiring the pictures. Then Mum (again!) bought me a selection of fat quarters for Christmas so that I could make my first quilt. I finished that first quilt and immediately started another one. I was hooked.

Great interview! I’ve seen and admired Rachel’s work around Flickr, but I didn’t realize she has a blog. Must follow! You shared so many spectacular finishes of hers!
Funny how we find someone one way online and then when we find out they have more places where they share their work it’s like hitting a gold mine. I really love Rachel’s work and I was so thrilled to be able to share her creative genius. ๐
