Sponsors & Prizes for #100Days100Blocks2018

While I know that the thrill of making a quilt is it’s own reward I also know that there’s nothing sweeter than winning something wonderful from someone fabulous. I’ve been truly lucky and blessed to have the following designers and businesses donate prizes for those that participate and make their quilt blocks as per the entry instructions. There will be one winner for each prize on offer; that’s pretty good odds!

I’ve listed all the prizes and their individual prize eligibility below. And because I love you and want to make it easy for you to win, I’ve simplified entry requirements so you’ll have no excuse for not being in the running to win.

Winner announcements are made in separate blog posts and contain all the details about how you can claim your prize, this is just the master list of details for those that want to see a full list. To see the latest winner announcement CLICK HERE.

Make Modern Magazine

Started in 2014 as a collaboration of three Aussie quilters passionate about modern quilting, Make Modern is a digital magazine published every two months. Each issue is written by our small team of modern quilters in Australia, and contains 10-14 modern quilt patterns from our team of amazing quilters from all over the globe 10-14 feature articles, including regular columns by quilt math expert Alyce from Blossom Heart Quilts, a quilt business column by Angie from GnomeAngel and a hilarious agony aunt column by Molli Sparkles plus loads more. Where can you buy Make Modern? Subscriptions and single issues are available exclusively from www.makemodern.com.au. Our magazine is digital – meaning you get a PDF copy that you can read on your phone, tablet or computer and print off a copy of a pattern if you wish. Why digital? It’s more accessible, so whether you’re in a neighbouring suburb in Australia, or across the globe in America or Europe, you’ll be able to read our magazine in the comfort of your own home. It’s more sustainable, think of all those happy trees! It takes up NO physical space which means more room for storing fabric. And it’s less expensive, leaving you with more dollars in your pocket to spend on….fabric?! Our goal is to be a driving force in the modern quilt community. We want you to feel like we’re already friends, the kind of friends who totally understand your fabric addiction, who will assist with your quilting problems and who will help you grow as a quilter. We hope you’ll love us even though we’re all a little bit crazy.

Pink Door Fabrics

Pink Door Fabrics was started in 2011 out of a love for bright, modern fabrics. With a background in interior design and marketing, it’s become the perfect marriage to nurture both my right and left brain! I grew up watching my mom sew, and taught myself to quilt in my 20’s using fabrics by Amy Butler and some of Tula Pink’s first lines. I wish I’d held onto more of that fabric! While I love quilts, I also love making bags and admittedly start way more projects than I actually finish. There just need to be a few more hours in the day to be creative! I’m as obsessed with texture and fabric as you are (yes, I hoard fabric, too!) and I hope that our custom-curated selection provides the perfect palette for your next quilting or sewing project. We tend towards the more modern in terms of aesthetic here at Pink Door, and love to put together custom quilt and bag kits that take the guess work out of choosing fabrics online. We ship worldwide, and love seeing where our pretty packages are traveling! Thanks for helping make a girl’s fabric dreams come true! We appreciate your business so much.

Prize: Pink Door Fabrics has kindly donated a $150 Gift Certificate.

Berry Patch Cottage Designs

Erin is re-launching Berry Patch Cottage Designs as a creative patchwork design business. She loves all the colours of the rainbow, but the deep berry colours of strawberry, blueberry, cherry, raspberry and boysenberry as well as forest greens and coffee browns are her colour comfort zone.

Her creative focus is to make practical items like bed sized quilts, cushions and table runners, and sewn or knitted children’s clothes. So she likes to think her quilt and craft patterns are both cool to look at and serve a practical purpose. Her children are her main inspiration, as is colour. Visit her blog to be inspired by some of her creations, and there is a link there to her Etsy store to buy her digital quilt patterns. Based in the lower South Island of New Zealand.

Patty Murphy Handmade

Patty Murphy is a C&T author, pattern designer, and teacher. She began sewing as a child and has been quilting for 26 years. Patty is primarily a self-taught quilter. She worked and taught at a quilt shop in Decatur, Georgia for ten years. While there, Patty met numerous quilters that had the same struggles she encountered while learning to quilt. Her personal quilting challenges and those she saw new quilters face were the inspiration to write her book, Piecing Makeover. The first printing of her book sold out, and a second run was printed earlier this year.

Patty launched a line of patterns this year and a will be featured on a segment of The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims this August. When she’s not quilting, you can find Patty with her husband and two boys, volunteering at the school, cooking, or reading.

Prize: Patty is giving away a signed copy of her best selling book, Piecing Makeover, and two of patterns (Game Over and All Squared Up) from her recently launched pattern line.

How Prizes are Allocated

Now that you’ve seen the amazing prize line up let’s talk a little bit about how prizes are allocated or won. Firstly, let me say this: For me, this event is not about prizes. It’s about creativity, having fun, making new friends and making a quilt that you will love. I only organise prizes because I like to do two things: 1. help promote those that are trying to keep our creative industry alive and 2. provide a little bit of excitement because everyone loves the chance to win something.

I dislike greed and so I try to spend as little time as possible on the administration of prizes or discussing the prize allocation process. If you’re participating in this event with your primary focus on winning a prize let me disavow you of that notion now. Statistically the chances of winning a prize are pretty slim so if you’re going to spend the next 100 days making and photographing quilt blocks with a primary focus on winning a prize chances are you’re going to leave empty handed and make a quilt that doesn’t make your heart sing. I’m not about that, and I will do everything within my power to make sure that that type of attitude towards participating is stamped out.

This event is designed to be a positive and uplifting experience for all that participate. If you don’t think you can get behind that, then that’s cool, this isn’t the event for you and that’s not a comment on your self-worth or your beliefs or anything else that can be construed as negative. It’s just the way it is. Sometimes we gel and sometimes we don’t. There are millions of other events out there that you can participate in or even host your own if this one doesn’t fit with you. It’s all gravy.

Prizes are allocated in the following manner:

I manually go through the prize pool, randomly select a possible winner (lots of blind finger on the screen type of action) and look to see if they have met all the criteria for a specific prize. The criteria is:

  • Posted correct block on correct day,
  • Block has been sewn as per the book pattern (this relates to seams, not fabric choice or block orientation),
  • Correct hashtag has been used,
  • The person is following the correct instagram accounts for the prize being allocated,
  • If relevant, the winner is in the correct country for the prize allocation (I will contact possible winners to confirm this detail if it is not obvious from their account which country they reside in.)

Blocks are not judged – so don’t worry about wonky seams, seam creep, fabric choices, etc. – however there are some things that contribute towards making my job a little easier to randomly pick a winner and allocate a prize:

  • Blocks are clearly photographed so that I can see the seams – there’s nothing covering the block corners, shadows falling over the block, photographed on a weird angle that obscures the seams, edge seam allowances are not obscured, etc.
  • Blocks are presented neatly and well lit – they’ve been ironed and there’s not an abundance of loose threads on them – this again is so that I can confirm that there’s been no shenanigans with how the blocks have been constructed. You don’t have to be a professional photographer, I just need a clean and clear shot of the blocks so that I can confirm everything. If you’re in doubt have a look through the past winners to see how they photographed their blocks. If you’re still not sure, send me a test photo of one of your blocks and we can talk about it.
  • Participant has not photographed the blocks on the book page that shows the measurements of the block (this is a breach of copyright and it will get you disqualified from the event and all future events) or has not been providing measurement for upsizing/downsizing the blocks, has not provided foundation paper pieced patterns to make the block or has not been making copies of the pattern or sharing it digitally. Basically you can’t have breached copyright.

And because I value transparency and I want you to be comfortable with how the event is administered here’s some other things that I take into consideration when allocating prizes:

  • Have you been greedy? If you’ve harassed me (and you’ll know if I think you’ve harassed me because I’ll have told you) about the prizes you will not win a prize. I’m not rewarding greed.
  • Have you been rude, demanding or unpleasant towards me or any of the event sponsors or participants? This event is run for free for participants. It takes a bucketload of uncompensated time and effort to pull together and administer. It is a massive undertaking which I do freely because I love this community so much and I want to have fun. If you have emailed me, DM’d me, commented on one of my posts and you have been rude, demanding, unpleasant or just plain nasty towards me or any other participants or event sponsors you will not win a prize. I maintain my right as the event administrator to exclude people from the prize pool who do not behave with respect, courtesy or common decency.
  • If I have to contact you about your entries you will have 24 hours to respond and I will do my best to make sure you’re aware that I’m chasing you. If I contact you, it does not mean you’ve won a prize, it may mean you’re in the running it also might just be me needing to clear something up. I will not tell anyone they’ve won a prize if it hasn’t been published on the blog first.
  • Do I know the winner? If the randomly drawn winner and I have a relationship/friendship I will not award them a prize. I do not want to get into a position where there’s doubt cast over the prize allocation process because people think I’m giving prizes to my friends. If you’re not sure if you fall into this category drop me a message and we’ll talk about it.
  • Is the winner a shop owner? If I’ve randomly drawn someone and they own a fabric shop, I won’t allocate them a prize. I don’t want to get into a position where someone could be awarded something and then on-sell it or use the information gathered from the prize allocation process nefariously. (Don’t roll your eyes, it’s happened before!)
  • Does the winner work for an event sponsor or a business within the industry? I will not allocate a prize knowingly to someone who works for one of the event sponsors. I will also try to not allocate a prize to someone who works for a big company within the industry where they have shown that they get access to perks (like free fabric) because they work for that business. For me, this event is (in part) about trying to spread prizes to those that don’t have access to this type of thing on a normal basis.
  • Is the winner an event sponsor? Event sponsors and their employess will not be eligible for prizes.
  • Am I related to the winner? Family will not be eligible for prizes. (Sorry Mum!)
  • There will not be double winners – if you’ve won a prize already in this event you will not win another one in this event.

As I’m sure you can appreciate finding winners from this big a participant pool combined with so many prizes is time consuming and laborious. I take every effort to ensure everyone is given an equal shot at winning the prizes, however the administrator’s (that’s me) decision is final and discussion will not be entered into about prize allocation.

This event is in no way associated or affiliated with Instagram.

You can either email through the site by clicking here or send me an email at hello[at]gnomeangel.com. Unclaimed prizes may be allocated to another winner at the discretion of the event host.
